Equipment Needed: None
Activity Description:
1. Have the participants sit in a circle.
2. Introduce the activity by letting the participants know they will be following rhythm by
clapping their hands and slapping their thighs.
3. Show the participants the rhythm by slapping your thighs twice and clapping your hands
twice.
4.Let the participants know that everybody in the circle is assigned a number.
5. Let the participant know that whoever takes the lead will say their number twice and say
another participants number twice to go with the rhythm. For example, if the leaders number is
2 and another participants number is 4, the leader will say 2,2,4,4, and the participant with the
number 4, would say 2,2,4,4,3,3 to add in another participant.
6. If one of the participants messes up on the rhythm or repeats a number, the participant is out.
However, the participant has to stay on the circle to make it harder for the other participants to
remember who is out and who is in.
Leadership Considerations:
1. When working with participants with down syndrome, it is important to note that it is
common that they have low muscle tone called hypotonia and this affects with motor
skills. It is also important to note that the participants with down syndrome may have
mild to moderate intellectual impairments so when giving the instructions, it is important
to be clear and ask if there are any questions before continuing.
2. Also, a good way to adapt this activity would be to make a rhythm that is easier to follow
or allow for more than one mistake when one is out.
3. For participants with bipolar disorder it is important to note that manic episodes, mood
episodes, and depressive episdoes are common which means, at once moment they may
experience a happy state, or an irritable state, or a sad depressive state.
4. For participants with bipolar disorder a good adaptation would be to make the activity go
around in a certain order to prevent tension depending on the the state the participant is
in.
