3. Objective(s): SWBAT describe the breakdown of the Executive Branch as well as
describe the roles of all the different cabinet departments
4. Materials and Resources: Prezi, Youtube video, Worksheet|

5. Instructional Procedures:
a. Introduction: On the board have written, What are the 3 branches of government?
What branch is congress under? Who makes up congress?
Give the students 5 minutes to write down their answers, then discuss them with
the class.
After this turn on CNN Student News, watch it and then discuss it with the class.
Then tell the students that we are starting with chapter 10, adding onto what we
previously learned about congress, we are going to learn about the rest of the
executive branch. (20 minutes total)
b. Activities or Learning Experiences:
Show video of President Obamas cabinet meeting so students have more of a visual
of the meetings and cabinet. (6 minutes)
Present Prezi, throughout prezi ask questions such as,
Compare and contrast the department of defense and the department of homeland
security?
What would be an example of a common government corporation?
How does the Department of Education impact you? What about the State
Department?
Why would the Department of Homeland Security been created?
What is the problem with regulatory commissions and who is in charge of them?
Lead a discussion surrounding the different departments, government corporations,
and regulatory commissions. (30 minutes)
Then give the students the worksheet The Federal Bureaucracy-Cabinet
Departments and Create Your Own Department project give them the rest of
class time to start on them.
c. Closure: Bring the students back together and ask them to share some of their
responses to how these departments impact their daily life. Ask them what are
some departments or government corps that they think we are missing. Tell them
that next class they will have more time for their project and then we will start on
chapter 11!

d. Extension and Contingency Plans: Give students more time to work on their
classwork and project
6. Accommodations and Modifications: Give students more time for certain work, print out
notes for students to follow along with.
7. Assessment and Evaluation of Learning: Assessment will take place throughout the
class with discussions and the questions. It will also take place with their homework
assignment and project!
