Emslie 2
Auschwitz was one of the most horrifying places on Earth. Most people who came here
did not make it out. Most people women, children, infants, and elders were sent to the gas
chambers immediately. 7 buildings in Auschwitz were used as gas chambers. The first
testing of the gas was held in block 11. Stammlager was the location of the first real gas
chamber. It could hold 700-800 people at one time. The gas that they used was called
Zyklon B. It was poured through openings in the roof, killing everyone inside. After its
use as a gas chamber, the SS used it as an execution site. Then, in 1944, is was turned
into an air-raid bunker.
Wiesel, Elie, and Marion Wiesel. Night. New York, NY: Hill and Wang, a Division of Farrar,
Straus and Giroux, 2006. Print.
This book was the story Elie Weisel. He was one of the few Holocaust survivors. Day in,
and day out, death surrounded him. Death surrounded everyone. Elie came face to face
with the furnaces at the beginning of his time in the camps. His mother and sister had to
go the other way. They were separated from the very beginning. Elies experience was
one that changes a person for good. He lived in the camps at a young age. He was the
only survivor from his family. Throughout the book, he explains the horrific things this
boy went through and saw. Everyone was starving, freezing, and exhausted. Some were
strong enough to survive. However, most were not as lucky. But, Elie was strong enough
and made it through.
