Copyright and Fair Use
There is a difference between copyright and fair use. Copyright is a law that protects any
of your creative work, on the other hand fair use is using someone elses work without any
permission. Fair use only needs four reasons to use the creators work, which are education,
news, criticizing, and humor or parody. Copyright law needs permission from the creator, as to
fair use there isnt a need for one. While taking the creators work the person has to give credit
and has to have a manner by using their work with copyright. Then, with fair use a person has to
use a portion of the creators work, give another meaning, change the original work in a different
way, the work cannot be used to make profit, and give credit to the creator for respect. The only
real difference between copyrights and fair use is the protection and permission.
The creation of someones work has a value to them. The amount of time and effort they
took to put their work together. There is authors, movie dictators, musicians, etc. People who
creates and wants to publish it to world, would either do that for an exchange of money or fame.
If it were to be your work and you wanted to make a profit out of it, dont you want to receive
money? Time is something valuable because no one can bring back what you wasted on and
having a person disrespect your work seem like you wasted your time. This is where the law of
copyright and fair use kicks in because people do illegal things that will let anybody receive
someones creations for free. For example, music, movies, apps, software, etc.

Copyright and fair use can be done intentionally or unintentionally. People who do it
intentionally try to ignore the fact that there is a law he/she is violating. Then, people who do it
unintentionally dont have any prior knowledge about copyright and fair use or forgot to follow
the law. For example, going to a website and downloading music, app, or software for free
knowing it has a value towards it, is violating the law of copyright and fair use, this is doing it
intentionally. Then an example for doing it unintentionally is copying the same words from a
passage and putting it on your work, but you forgot to cite the author. Its important to follow the
law because at the end you may end up with a consequence.
There is way to teach someone to learn about copyright and fair use. The way I will teach
my students is asking them, what they know about copyright and fair use. After, I will tell my
students what they said was right or wrong. Then, go more into details in copyright and fair use
by stating the differences. NETS for students have a standard of digital citizenship, which can
help explain more about copyright and fair use. This digital citizenship standard has four points.
The first point ISTE listed is, advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of
information and technology, this will help me show my students how to use the first point for
help in practicing the use of copyright and fair use. The second point ISTE listed is, exhibit a
positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity,
it helps show how we should use copyright and fair use. The third point ISTE listed is,
demonstrate personal responsibility for lifelong learning, I can demonstrate my students about
how copyright and fair use can be useful in the future. The last point ISTE listed is, exhibit
leadership for digital citizenship, it can help describe the problems it generates for not using
copyright and fair use. This would be my way of educating, but there can be other way to
educate someone about copyright and fair use.
