Abstract:

Inthisresearchpaperitexplorestheimpactofsocialmediawithinthediscourse
communityofSouthLosAngeles.Thedeleteriousinformationfrommediais
affectingthelowincomecommunitiesbyharmingthestudentpopulationcreating
discriminationfromsociety.ThepublicschoolsfromSouthLosAngelesarefacing
cutbacksandotherindependentprogramsarehelpingthediscoursecommunity.

OurdailyTelevisionBroadcastandSocialMediadisclosemanydeleterious
informationaboutthelowincomecommunities,howevermostofmaterialinformation
ismisleadingtothelowincomecommunitiesbyfocusingonaparticularsideofthe
community.Forexample,inthenewsreportarticleof
LosAngelesTimes
hasshown
violencehasincreasedfromthepastyearof2015.AccordingtotheLosAngeles
PoliceDepartment(LAPD)officialstold,KillingsinLosAngeleshavesurgedby
27.5%sofarin2016comparedtothesameperiodlastyearasthecitycontinuedto
seeariseinviolentcrime(Mather1).Thematerialinformationisaffectingthelow
incomecommunitiesbycreatinganegativeicon,inwhichthepublicschooldistricts
hasanimpactonthestudentspopulationabbreviatingtheireducationalpathwith
lackoffundingtoo.Abrokenpathwaystartswithinalowincomecommunity
surroundedwithgreed,crime,ambition,andunguidedindividualsinwhich,the
mediaandtelevisionportrayit.

Thelowincomecommunityisknownforitsappallingaspectofcriminal
activitybutit'salso,affectingtheindividualswithdiscriminationbyhavingless
opportunitiesobtaininghighereducationandjobs.Inaddition,tothecriminalactivity
withinSouthLosAngelesithassignificantlydecreasedduetorealizingthat
educationhasagreatroleinsuccess.PaysingeraLosAngelesPolicedepartment
officialdisclosesomeinformationtoLosAngelesTimesaboutcrimewithinSouth
LosAngeles.AccordingtoPaysingerpropertycrimehasfallen2%,fueledlargelyby
whatPaysingerdescribedasa"remarkable"16.2%dropinburglaries.Asaresult,
overallcrimeisuplessthanapercentagepointfrom2015,Paysingersaid(Mather

1).IstronglyagreewithPaysingerit'sremarkablethatcrimehasdecreasedinSouth
LosAngeles.Iunderstandcrimehappenallaroundtheworldindifferentrates
however,educationisidealfortheupcomingyoungergeneration.Nevertheless,
highereducationrateshasincreasedaccordingtoNivenstatisticsfound,inwhich
5%ofyoungblackpeoplearesucceedinginhighereducationinSouthAfrica
(Niven642).Thepopulationallovertheworldhasobtainedthathighereducationis
dealforsuccess.Incontrast,SouthLosAngelesstillhasboundlesslackof
opportunitiesforminoritieswantinghighereducationduetopoorfundingwithinLos
AngelesUnifiedSchoolDistrict(LAUSD)affectingthesuccessonstudentachieving
highereducation.

LosAngelesUnifiedSchoolDistrict(LAUSD)hasfacedcutbacksending
programshelpingstudentstryingtoachievinghighereducation.Isitpossiblethat
dreamsmayendofhighereducationManyjobsprogramsforyoungpeopleare
facingafundingcliffnowthatfederalstimulusmoneyfromtheAmericanRecovery
andReinvestmentActof2009hasrunout.Schooldistrictsfacetheirownfunding
cliffwiththephasingoutofstimulusfundschanneledtothemthroughTitleIofthe
NoChildLeftBehindAct.Inaddition,theslashingofstatebudgetshasaffectedboth
jobsprogramsanddistricts'summerschoolofferings(Zehr1).Theimpactoflow
fundingorcutbackismuchgreaterbyalso,affecttheeconomicandfutureofour
comingupgenerations.AmericanRecoveryandReinvestmentActof2009signed
byBarackObamahasranoutindeed,todayit'saffectingtheeducationsystem,
healthcare,andrecyclableenergyprogram.Forexample,NoChildLeftBehindAct
stillishelpingstudentsbut,IexperienceddifferentlywithinmyHighSchoolinSouth

LosAngeles.IemailapasteducatorofManualArtHighSchoolinwhich,thepast
educatorhasdisclosedthat,ManualArtHighSchoolhigherrankingstaffdoesnotlet
teachersgivefailstostudent.Thepasteducatorfeelsbadaboutstudentgoingto
ManualArtsHighSchoolFernando,ManualArtsjustcaresaboutpassingstudents
givingoutfailsorholdingstudentsbackisnotrealistic.Ihadtopasssomestudents
justtokeepstaffhappyandkeepmyjob.ThebadexperiencesfromManualsArthas
mademetobecomeabetterteacherinadifferentschool!Thestaffandteachers
justdon'tcareaboutthestudents.Ithinkteachersjustwanttheeasypaycheckbut,
it'snotallofteachersandstaff(PastEducator).Ihaveseenthisfacehandby
observingstudentsnotcompletingassignmentsandstillpassingintothenextgrade
level.Theworksheetandsmallpowerpointsaremeaninglesstoteachersbut,the
lackoffundingiscreatingmoredamageforstudents.

Overallsocialmediaandtelevisionbroadcasthasgreatinfluenceson
teachersaffectingexpectationsonlowincomestudentsbasedonmisleading
information.Thelowincomecommunityisdefinedindifferentways.Idefinedthelow
incomecommunityasacommunitysurroundedwithgreed,crime,andambitionto
achievehighereducation.Toclarify,BellHooksshareherdescriptionofalow
incomecommunityThepoorlivewithandamongthepoorconfinedingated
communitieswithoutadequateshelter,food,orhealthcarethevictimsofpredatory
greed(hooks).Thepoorhassomeunforgottensituationbut,overallthe
disempowermentmakesthemstrongertomoveforwardinlife.Forexample,Hooks
addsanewvisionofthediscoursecommunityMoreandmorepoorcommunitiesall
overthecountrylooklikewarzones,withboardedupbombedoutbuildings,with

eithertheevidenceofgunfireeverywhereorthevacantsilenceofunsatisfied
hunger(hooks).Thelowincomecommunitydoesnotlookwonderfulbut,theheart
ofthepeopleshineinthedarkness.TodaytheperspectivesofSouthLosAngeles
variesbetweenpositiveandnegativehowever,thenegativedarkimageryismore
influencedbythemedia.Overallthepeopleinlowincomecommunitiesfacemore
obstacleslike,discrimination,lackoffundingwithinpublicschoolsandlimited
opportunitiesforjobs.
Theideasfortheindividualswithinthelowincomecommunityconsistmostly
aboutcrimeanddrugs.Inaddition,somehugeinfluencefortheseideasofdrugsand
crimeisthemediadisplayingit.Thecreationofadarkimagebeginsforthe
community.Inmystandingpointdrugsandcrimeissometimestheonlypossibility
oftomoveupinclassorsurviveanotherdaywithinthediscoursecommunitylacking
fundingforhighereducationandopportunitiesforbetterpaidjobs.Additionally,the
discriminationforminoritiesandtheirsocialclassstandingarestillafactorforthe
community.Thepeopleinthelowincomecommunityturnstocrimeanddrugforthe
lasthopeofachievingsuccess.Whilethepoorareofferedaddictionasawayto
escapethinkingtoomuch,workingpeopleareencouragedtoshop.

escapetheworldbytoday'ssocietyconsistingofmoney!Coupledwith,
CampbellGrossman,Christie,etalisthat,theworkingclassistargetedtoshop
moreandmoreneverendingtheworkingclassasBellHookscallsitinherbook

workingclass
asHooksshareto

isparentsworkinglonghoursandsometimesbecomingstrangerstofamilyand

children.Workinglongshoursjusttokeepthefamilysupportedorbuyingtheir
childrentheredesirejusttokeepthemhappy.

Theworkingclasspeopledon'tnotethatSouthLosAngelespublicschools
arelackingfundingfortheirchildren.Alternatively,theworkingclasswillspendthat
hardearnedmoneyonprivateschoolsoradifferentschoolsystemfortheir
children'ssuccess.First,itfocusesspecificallyonlowincomestudents(thoseinthe
lowestquartilenationallyintermsoffamilyincome)attendingurbanschools.
Second,itscoreshigherinsomeacademicareasthanthoseattendingothertypes
ofprivateschoolsorpublicschools.Theotherexceptionisthatstudentsin
independentprivatehighschoolshavehigherSATscoresthanstudentswhoattend
publicschools(PerkinsGough).Thebetteroverallperformancefromlowincome
studentsattendingprivateorotherhigherfundschoolsystemboonshowingmuch
suceesinacademics,skillsandtestscores.Theincreaseofabetterfundschoolis
showwithinthestudentpopulation.ThebetterfundSouthLosAngelespublic
schoolswillcreateahugechangechangingsomenegativelabelsofthelowincome
community.However,theworkingclassaretargetedtoshopforexpensivegoodsby
mediamakingsomeelselifestylerealize.And,theyoutharefollowingbehindtoo.

Theonemostimportantfactorforsomeyouthnotachievinghigher
educationislackofsupportfromparents.And,toescapeoffeelingunsupportedthey
leadintodrugusagejusttoeraseeverythingaroundthemlikediscrimination,low
expectationsandmore!Todaythestudentbodyisbecomemorecuriousabout
educationbyviewingstudentsinmyhighschool.Everythingischangingnowdueto

theamazingeducationalprogramsforlowincomestudentsinthecommunity.The
programsstillneedsomehelpfromthepublicschooldistrictsinclassroomsinspiring
studentstochasedreamz.Theprogramsextendedtolowincomecommunitiesinmy
highschoolhelpstudentstohaveabettertransitionofhighereducation.Upper
Boundisgoldenforlowincomestudentsbyalltheinformationandsupportgiven
withoutthisinspiringprogram.UpwardBoundisafederallyfundededucational
programwithintheUnitedStates.TheSouthLosAngelesDistrictdoesnotsupportit
withfundinginwhich,ithasgreatersupport.Istronglybelievethat,UpwardBoundis
creatingbetteropportunitiesforlowincomestudents.TheUSCprogramnowhas
morethanathousandalumniwithcollegediplomasfromthroughoutthecountry.
Since1977,UpwardBoundhashelped1,280youngstersgofromhighschoolto
college,and1,088ofthemreceiveddiplomas(Tucker).Theprogramnowishelping
studentstochasedreamzandfillemptinesswithcollegeexperiencesanddiplomas.
IstillsawtheUpwardBoundprogramhelpstudentsfeelapartofacommunitymost
importantly.UpwardBoundissuccessfulinbringoutsuccessinstudentsfromSouth
LosAngelesmakingsomelowexpectationsbecomeevanescentovertime.Yes,I
seeseenegativeperspectivesthatsomepeoplestillhavetodayhowever,themedia
andtelevisionisaddingmorepositiveinformationaboutthediscoursecommunity.

InAddition,discriminationisstillpresenttodaywithinsocietybyobserving
discriminationtoSouthLosAngelesstudentsataUniversitytrip.Iattenda
UniversitytriptoSanLuisObispoStateUniversityanditwasamazingbythe
atmospherefeelingfresh,full,andjustwonderful.Theatmospherewasshortlived
suddenly,IsawstudentsfromSanLuisObispoStateUniversityholdingdistanttous.

Istilldon'tunderstandtodayhowever,thestudentsmanyholdlabelsorpast
experiencesinwhich,distantfeelsideal.Actually,somestudentsbecomeimpactby
thedistantalso,discouragedabouteducation.Thestudentwantedacommunity
feelingwitheveryone.Inparticular,theUpwardBoundprogramhelpstudentswith
tutoring,mentoringandexposuretocollegelifeaswellasnewculturaland
educationalexperiences(Tucker).TheUpwardBoundprogramishelpingmoreand
morewithdifferentexperiences,exposureofclassandraceandculture.The
informationandexperiencesgainarepricelessUpwardBoundhastheupperhandin
education.TheLosAngelesUnifiedSchoolDistrictisnothelpingstudentslike
UpwardBound.TheLosAngelesUnifiedSchoolDistrictneedsbetterfundingor
programsforlowincomestudentstochasedreamz.

Thecycleisenervatingslowlybut,anotherobstacleisemerging.TheLos
AngelesUnifiedSchoolDistricthasnotprovidedmuchfundingandsupportfor
studentslongtermorshorttermeducationalplans.Ihaveemailapassededucator
thathascreatedanewsandingpointformyeducationalroad.Thepassededucator
hasdeadonchangedmebyworkingverydiligent.Ididnottakemyeducation
seriouslybytheteachersbeingveryaridwithoutcharacterjustgivingusapackage
tocompete.Theemailconversionorinterviewwentwellbydiscoveringthetruth
aboutManualArtsHighSchool
Theschoolisnotterrible,butthereisanattitude
amongtheteachersthatsincethisisaghettoschooltheyshouldbeabletodo
whatevertheywant(PsatEducator).
Theschoolideaonstudentsbeingghettois
wronghowever,teachersdon'tcareaboutstudentslongtermplansjustgivingout
handoutandtextbookchapterworkisidealtothem.Iwascorrectedaboutmyschool

it'sjustsad.
Thereisnoleadershipfromtheadministrationandteachersruntheir
classes
Iunderstandthecarelessfeelingtheyhadonthestudentbody.Today,I
knowthat'sstillaproblem.

Thestudentpopulationcanfixthediscriminationandlowexpectationsby
becomingeducatedprovingsocietywrong.TheUpwardBoundprogramwillhelpus
createabetterimageforthediscoursecommunityaddingbetterschoolfundingfor
SouthLosAngelespublicschoolswilljusthelpourfuturegenerations.Theideaof
opportunitiesbecomingevanescentbyshortagefundingfromLosAngelesUnified
SchoolDistrict(LAUSD)islikeourgeneration'snotabletosavelivesorhelpothers
withinheathfieldandotherfieldschangingourworld.

becomingacceptedandtheideaofworkinghardtobecomeequal.Today,Hooks
sparkedanideathatnotbodywillbeequalwithintheworldwithregionhelpdueto
thefactofeveryoneracingtothetop.
