Equipment Used: N/A
Grade Level: 1st
Time: 11:10am-11:18am
Targeted NASPE Standard(s): Standard 3 - The physically literate individual
demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a healthenhancing level of physical activity and fitness.
Specific Objective: By the end of the lesson, students should understand
what/why some snacks are better than others for your heart (and body overall).
(Answer: healthy foods, like the apple, help to keep your heart healthy and strong.
When your heart is healthy and strong you will be able to complete higher
amounts of exercise, with little stress on your heart. On the other hand, junk food,
like cookies, can make your heart unhealthy. When your heart is unhealthy, it has
to work extra hard to do low amounts of exercise. This means your heart has to
beat much faster to do normal amounts of activity, which can shorten your
lifetime.)
Concomitant Objective: The students will stay physically active while learning
about what foods are better for you and your heart

facing the back wall while the rest of the students stand
on a straight line behind them. Students will be divided
into cookies and apples. The doctors will call out how
many bites of a snack they want. The number of bites
equals the number of steps the students have to take
towards the doctors. When the doctor calls out Im full
they turn around and tag the cookies and apples. Since
the cookies make a heart work harder, they have to walk
back to the safety line. Since the apples help the heart,
they can run back to the safety line. Once they are
tagged, the doctor makes them healthy so they can run.
The tagged students now help out the doctors. If time
allows, switch the apples and cookies for a second
round.
Possible Modifications: If we need to make it easier I
will have the apples take large steps to and from the
doctors. Cookies will take small steps to and from the
doctors. To make it harder, cookies could hop away from
doctors while apples can skip away from doctors.
___30__ Lesson Review: Was harder to be a cookie or an
seconds apple? Why? Ask the students to share what they have
learned from the lesson. They learned that nutritious
foods help keep your heart healthy which will allow you
to be more active.
