Procedures:
Schema activation: Students will go to the gathering place.
(3 minutes) Allow the students some time to ponder why there is a
picture of a top hat brought up on the smart board. Ask the students
the following questions using call sticks:
o Does anyone know what this is a picture of?
o Who wore this hat?
o What do we know about Abraham Lincoln?
(3 minutes) Complete the know and want to know portion of the
KWL chart with input from the students.
o The KWL chart will let the teacher know what the students want
to learn from the lesson.
o Prompt the students as necessary and use the call sticks to
select them at random to answer.
Next Steps:
(5 minutes) Complete a Picture Walk of Abraham Lincoln`s Hat.
o Use the call sticks to select students and ask them what they
think is going on in the pictures.
o Inform the students of the reading focus.
Try to figure out why you think Abraham Lincoln`s hat is so
important.
What is something you didnt already know about Abraham
Lincoln?
(7 minutes) Read Abraham Lincoln`s Hat and stop periodically
throughout the reading to check for understanding.
(4 minutes) Bring back the KWL chart. This time the students will be
completing the learned portion.
o Ask the questions posed earlier one at a time and allow students
shoulder partner time.
o Use the call sticks to select students to share.
(30 seconds) Brain break
o The students will reach for the sky, wiggle, and shake.
(8 minutes) Hand out the Abraham Lincoln`s Hat writing prompt.
o The students will be writing about what they would put in their
hat if they had a hat like Abraham Lincoln.
o Provide a personal example for the students.
o Ask them to strive for two complete sentences.

o Monitor the class and make sure students understand the project
and are staying on task.
o Once the students write their two sentences about what they
would put in the hat, they will be given permission to cut out the
hat for the bulletin board.
o Students will be encouraged to use pencil and write neatly
because their hats will be going on the bulletin board.
Closure:
(2 minutes) Students will share what they chose to put in their hat with
the members of their table groups.
(2minutes) Return to the KWL chart and fill out the learned portion.
Evaluation:
Informal observation as the students answer questions posed
throughout the lesson.
Amount of effort put into their hat.
o Students may choose to make a neat copy for the bulletin board.
o Did they select an appropriate object to put in their hat?
Self-Evaluation:
I feel like this lesson will be engaging for 1st grade students. The KWL
chart allows them a chance to think critically about Abraham Lincoln and ask
questions they may have about him. The top hat writing prompt appeals to
their egocentric tendencies, but makes a connection from to read aloud
because it challenges students to think about what is important to them just
like Abraham Lincoln thought it was important to put letters in his hat.
