"The diversity of the members of a profession should reflect the diversity of the members of the
population served"
Diversity in a health care setting is essential in the care of the patients who are within it. This
country is proud of its diversity which includes culture, backgrounds, lifestyles, and religions just
to name a few. For health care professionals when giving care to a patient in need being able to
understand the need of a patient medically but also physically and mentally are key components.
A populations health care system should be in accordance with the population that it serves. The
health care professionals should be able to relate to the lifestyle, background, and the history of
its surroundings to be able to effectively serve their patients medically and efficiently. For
example CHKD in this area is a local children's hospital that offers care to for children from
infants up to young adults. The facility and staff are equipped and trained in the manner that is
compassionate and efficient for children. Techniques that may be used for adults or senior
citizens may not be the best plan of action for a small child, so they have conformed to the need
and restraints of that population of patients that need care in their facility. More diverse health
professions will lead to improvements in public health, and population health outcomes. The
diversity of the profession will also lead to increasing access to care for underserved populations,
and by increasing opportunities for minority patients it is important to give support and observe
the members of the group because the structure of the population shifts occurring in the United
States will have an impact on the workforce composition in the coming decades. Health care
executives must look for new insights, examples and best practices to help navigate their
organizations through a diversity journey. Most times individuals may feel that they can only
relate to someone that is like them. This could be the same sex, color, or even life
circumstances. When a patient/customer feels that they have a relatable similarity they tend to
trust, communicate, and even provide loyalty because of that reflective image provide through
diversity by the organization.
