Lynched African American men, women, and children.
Consisted of millions of whites.
Wore white clothing that hid their faces.
Used violence against those who did not obey their rules regarding the persons race.

1870 - U.S. Congress passed the Enforcement Act, attempted to prevent the
KKK from violating citizens constitutional protections but the law produced
little result.
1870-The South Carolina republican governor Robert Scott was elected of the
African American vote,enraging members of the kkk.
1871- President Grant suspended writ habeas corpus in response. It applied to
all arrest made by the us marshals and federal troops in the state's western
countries. By the end of November some 600 arrest were made.

Why is this organization so important to the Civil


Rights Movement?
The ku klux klan was a direct response to the souths defeat in the
Civil war
the klan targeted black freedmen and their allies; it sought to restore white
supremacy by threats and violence, including beatings, lynchings, and murder.
Congress had took action to curtail the violence and the organization by using
Enforcement Acts to prosecute Klansmen.

During the late 1960s the kkk burned school buses, burned crosses,
bombings, beatings and lynching to prove the point they live on.
The kkk was an important part of the civil rights movement because
they were against the equal rights for all the colors in people.

How did the KKK relate to the novel?


The KKK believed
whites were a racially superior compared to blacks
they shouldnt have rights
they are less than whites
Lynching was OK to do to an African American

The KKKs beliefs relate to How to Kill a Mockingbird because it


describes how the African Americans were treated like second-hand
citizens. They didnt have the same rights compared to a white
person. The KKK had also lynched many African Americans from
early as the 1880s which later became a normal practice in the
South until the 1930s. Many African Americans were killed for no
