Begin with a light overview of Madame Bovary and a short discussion of the
ending(see the discussion questions section)
- Move onto a brainstorming session where students have to think about the major
themes of the novel
- Remind students that a theme is a recurrent idea that is woven throughout the story
and that novels can easily have more than one theme.
- Explain that one of the major themes of the novel could be described as "illusion
versus reality." Ask students to describe how that theme is reflected in the novel.
- Class-wide T-Chart of Illusion vs Reality and ask students to fill it in. For example,
under illusion, students will cite examples from the novel that show the illusions of
Emma and other characters. And in the reality column, they will explain the reality
behind that illusion.
- After the activity, students will receive homework of a worksheet entitled: Theme
Worksheet Additionally students will have to give one example of a character's illusion
in the novel, along with the reality behind that illusion and do a brief character
analysis.

- Introduce the students to the lesson by starting with a memorable quote from
Flaubert:
- You forget everything. The hours slip by. You travel in your chair through
centuries you seem seem to see before you, your thoughts are caught up in
the story, dallying with the details or following the course of the plot, you
enter into characters, so that it seems as if it were your own heart beating
beneath their costumes.
- Point out how reading and letting yourself be enraptured by media is similar to
letting yourself be fooled by illusions of reality.
