Procedure

1. Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word

problems involving situations of adding to, taking
from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing,
with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects,
drawings, and equations with a symbol for the
unknown number to represent the problem.
Students will comprehend the correct amount of two
or more numbers (within twenty) being added to or
subtracted from. In addition to illustrating simple
addition and subtraction equations, and word
problems; using pictures, or symbols to solve.
Smart Board/ Overhead

Blocks
Pencil
Paper

I will construct an example on the smart board of two

different colored blocks, allowing students to follow
along with their own plastic blocks. I will begin by
putting up a very basic numerical equation
(subtraction or addition) followed by drawing the
layout of the blocks on the smart board to match the
equation.

i.e. 2+1= or 2-1=

Students will say the equation aloud with me as well

as count the two different colored blocks to complete
the equation.
Assessment

I will put students in a group of 3 and then place a

problem on the board for each group.
I.e. 6 + 5, 4+5, 7+3, 5-4, 2-1.
Ill then have each group depict the equation, using
the blocks.
Subsequently, Ill go to each group and ask one
student out of the group how many blocks they ended
up with after solving. Repeating, using different
equations, until it is clear each student understands.
