"Hybrid Courses: About Hybrid." Hybrid Courses: About Hybrid. Learning Technology Center,
n.d. Web. 14 Mar. 2016.
The University of Wisconsin made an article on hybrid classes. This article was mainly
written to explain to the reader what a hybrid class is and how it differs from online courses. It
explains that the purpose of hybrid classes is to utilize face-to-face learning as well as online.
This article is located under frequently asked questions so I am assuming that many students
have questions about what a hybrid class is. This author used logos to appeal to his reader. The
author also portrayed themselves as credible. With this passage coming from the University of
Wisconsin, every bit of information seemed to be precise.
"Hybrid Courses." Meeting In Person And Online. Scholarships, n.d. Web. 15 Mar. 2016.
This article explains the advantages and disadvantages of taking a hybrid class. The
instructor can use videos and web clips in their lectures, also they can use instant messaging and
class-wide chat rooms to communicate with their students. These are all advantages of taking a
hybrid course. The author says that they think it depends on the student, whether or not the
classes have a higher success rate. By saying think I believe it takes away from the credibility.
The author should have supported this theory with a statistic. This article was written with a

pathos point-of-view. The advantages and disadvantages appeal to the emotional side. This lets
people know how its going to be when they are taking a hybrid and gives them an opportunity to
decide what they want to do.
LaMartina, David. "The Hybrid Classroom: Just as Effective as In-Person Lecturing?" Edcetera.
Rafter, 21 Sept. 2012. Web. 15 Mar. 2016.
David has written about 605 students were studied. They were placed in a control and
treatment hybrid class. The results came back from the study and the online students
outperformed their peers on the final exam. This experiment was made to see exactly how
effective hybrid courses are. However, we can base our information off of this one experiment.
This article provides lot of statistics and facts about testing which is logos. I cannot base my
entire essay off of this one experiment but it is helpful because I can compare these test results to
another study.
Susie Zappia. "Pros & Cons of Hybrid Courses." Pros & Cons of Hybrid Courses. Hearst Seattle
Media, n.d. Web. 15 Mar. 2016.
Susie Zappia wrote an article on what to consider before enrolling in a hybrid course. To
start o with, she explained that hybrid classes can also be called blended learning. To add to
her credibility, she adds in that the University of Washington at Bothell defines hybrid courses
as one where 25 to 50% of the traditional face-to-face class time is replaced with online work.
She also provided a checklist of criteria for students who are considering taking a hybrid course.
This article is very informative. She uses logos to elaborate on what there is to know about a
hybrid course. She uses sources such as different colleges to back up her information. This is

very helpful to me because I can compare this information to studies of students that are in a
hybrid class, or have taken one.
"Welcome to the Northern Virginia Community College Website." What Is a Hybrid Course?
Northern Virginia Community College, 2016. Web. 15 Mar. 2016.
Northern Virginia Community College wrote an article on homework and workload of a
hybrid class. It explains that a typical course worth 3 credits will require about 10 hours a week
for homework. The workload will also be the same if not more than in a face-to-face course. It
explains that if a course meets face-to-face on Tuesday, it will not meet on Thursday. Instead, the
students will be required to do online activities that would be equivalent to that second class
meeting. This is very useful for my essay. I can use this information to support my reasoning on
why I think hybrid classes are effective or not.
