ValleyCommunityCollegeonWednesday,February24th.Theclasstookplacefrom11:00AM
until11:55AM.BeinggoodfriendswithMs.Coolsdaughter,wewerebothexcitedtoobservea

collegelevelteachingexperience,astheonlypriorinsightwehadwasoursingleIntroduction
toPsychologycourse.WebegantheobservationbymeetingMs.Coolinheroffice,whereshe
informedusthatshehadjustfinishedgradingherstudentsassignmentsthirtyminutespriorto
ourmeeting.Itwasrefreshingtoknowthatevenatthecollegelevel,procrastinationwas
common.Nonetheless,Ms.Coolwasreadytobeginherday,andwetookoffdownthehallway
toherclassroom,wheremanystudentswerelinedupoutsideinthehallwayawaitingherarrival.
AnnaandIsatamongthestudentsasMs.Coolstartedclassonanexcitednote.Itwas
endearingtoseeherclearpassionforhercareer.Aftertakingattendance,sheinformedthe
studentsthattheywouldbetravelingtothegymformostofclassthatday,whichmostofthem
seemedtoalreadybepreparedfor.Thosewhowerent,scurriedofftogofindgymclothes,or
theIDBadgeneededtoenterthegymandloginhoursneededforpointsintheclass.Ms.Cool
passedbackthestudent'smostrecentassignments,aresearchnotebook.Shedirectedthemto
thepageinwhichtheirgradecouldbefound,anddiscussedthecriterianeededinorderto
improvetheirscoresforthenextassignment.Sherequestedthatstudentstakenotesonthis
information,andwhenonestudentfailedtocomplyduetonothavinghisnotebook,shepolitely
yetfirmlyaskedhimtotakethenotesonaseparatepieceofpaper.Shethenhadstudents
recordtheircurrentpreworkoutpulseintotheirnotebooksaswell.
Aftersquaringeverythingawayintheclassroom,Lenastatedthatshewaswaitingto
takeattendanceuntiltheygottothegym,becausesheknewthatstudentstendtogetloston
theirwaythere,(thegymislocatedrightnextdoortoherclassroom,)alsoknownasskipping
thatportionoftheclass.AfterMs.CoolandallofthestudentsusedtheirIDstoenterthegym,
shebroughtustoacorneroftheroomfilledwithdifferentcardiobasedexercisemachines.The
areawasmarkedoffwithasignreadingreservedforcyclingclass@11:00.Inoticedthat
someotherKVCCstudentsinthegymweredispleasedwiththis,buttheystillcompliedandthe

areawasleftemptyforMrs.Coolsclasstouse.Theclasswasinstructedtolineupfrom
shortesttotallest,andwaseachsenttoadifferentworkoutmachine.Everycoupleofminutes,a
stoplightonthewallwouldtransitionfromredtogreen,indicatingthatitwastimeforthe
studentstoswitchequipments,goinginorder130fromthelabels,muchsimilartohowan
elementaryschoolclasstransitionsfromstationtostationthroughouttheirday.Aftertaking
attendance,Mrs.Cooljumpedrightinwiththestudents,encouragingthem,andgivingadvice
onhowtoproperlyusecertainequipment.Forexample,onemanwasusingamachineinan
incorrectmannerinwhichshesaidhewouldhurthisback.Shegothimaweightfromanother
areainthegymtoholdwhileusingtheequipmentthecorrectway,sohewouldntfeelasifhe
wasntgettingtheproperworkoutheneeded.
Throughouttheexercise,halfthestudentswerestationedatelipticalmachines,whereas
theotherhalfwerescatteredthroughoutotherequipment.Eventually,Mrs.Coolinstructedthe
groupattheellipticalstotaketheirpulse,guidingthemalong,andrecorditintheirnotebooks
oncemore.Thiswastheduringworkoutpulsecheck.Astimepassed,theothergroup
eventuallytooktheirpulseaswell.Realizingshewascuttingitcloseontime,Mrs.Cool
instructedeveryonetostopwhattheyweredoingandtakeonefinalpulse,andrecordit.This
wasthepostexercisepulse.Shesaidgoodbyetotheclass,andtheydepartedhurriedlytotheir
nextcourse.Mrs.LenaCoolwasanexcellentrolemodelforteachingonthatday,never
ceasingtoshowoffabrightandpositiveattitude,bothtowardsusjobshadowingher,andthe
studentswithinherclass.Itwasveryclearfromthe55minutesobservingherthatsheendedup
inthecorrectfield.
