Wind energy has experienced a large growth since the year 2000 and it is now expected to generate

approximately 4 to 5% of the worlds electricity. The leading users of wind energy are China, USA, India,
Germany and other European countries. Over the past few years, wind energy has made improvements
in four key areas which are cost, capacity, transmission line improvement and status. Costs has dropped
significantly by 65% since 1988 and in the US alone accounts for 47% of the year 2015s new generation
capacity. With highly promising results, it is expected that wind energy will serve 20% of the US
electricity needs by the year 2030.

Despite the popularity and success of wind energy, there are quite a few problems that need to be
addressed in order to utilize wind energy to its full potential. One of the common problems include
wakes created near the wind turbines which are usually measured with lidars to a sufficient accuracy or
rudimentary .
