Imagine life for mankind before the Renaissance. People thought that only
religion was the most important thing about living during the Middle Ages.
Wherever you went you would see symbolic things for God and religion. People
thought that they couldnt do much and that they werent that important. When
the Renaissance era came people became more dependent and believed other
things too. They started creating art, music, plays, and many other things that
they didnt do before. In other words people thought they were just as important
as religion and it became less important , but still a common thing. The
Renaissance was a period in Europe that started in the year approximately 1400
until the year 1700. The impact that the Renaissance had was very powerful and
has kept enduring through the centuries. Without the Renaissance many of the
things we have now may have never happened because it was the Renaissance
that changed the way people think today. The Renaissance change mans view
of man through cultural and scientific advances.
First of all, cultural advances in the Renaissance change mans view of
man. According to a Painting by Duccio Di Buoninsegna during the Middle
Ages, it shows a woman sitting down on a throne carrying a baby and they both
have halos around their heads. The painting also shows two angels flying behind
the woman which shows that during the Middle Ages people did religious
paintings. As it shows in a Painting by Leonardo Da Vinci during the
Renaissance, Mona Lisa is now shown and instead of there being a halo behind
her, nature is the scenery. Religious figures are not shown anymore and it
changed into more humanism. This evidence changed mans view of man from
being religious to having a more humanist way of thinking in their drawings.
Another cultural advance that changed mans view of man was performing arts.
In an English Play called Everyman during the Middle Ages it states, Both
strength, pleasure, and beauty, Will fade from thee flower in May. For ye shall
hear, how our Heaven- King Calleth Everyman to a general reckoning. This
shows that when people spoke of humans they did it in a negative way and only
sad bad things about themselves. Based on an English play called Hamlet by
William Shakespeare during the Renaissance it stated, What a piece of work is
a man! How noble in reason In apprehension how like a god! The beauty of the
world! This quote proves that during the Renaissance people thought of
themselves in a more positive way and when they spoke of themselves nothing
negative was said. This evidence changed mans view of man from people
thinking of themselves in a negative way to thinking of themselves in a positive.

Another way the Renaissance change mans view of man was through
scientific advances. Located in The Geocentric Universe of Ptolemy it shows how
Claudius Ptolemy viewed the universe during the Middle Ages. Earth was seen
as the center of the universe because they thought that since they were the only
planet with people in it they should be in the center. Demonstrates in The
Heliocentric Universe of Copernicus it shows how Nicolaus Copernicus proved
that Earth was really not the center of the Universe. He proved that the Sun was
actually the center of the Universe and the earth was actually the third plant close
to the Sun. This evidence changed mans view of man because at first they didnt
have the technology or knowledge to know that the Earth was not the center of
the earth but when the Renaissance occurred knowledge and connection to
nature and the truth was known. Scientific advances also changed mans view of
man was through anatomy. As it shows in A woodcut called Zodiac Man by
Johann Regiomontanus of the Middle Ages people believed that their body was
controlled by zodiac signs. Whenever they felt an emotion they thought it was
one of the zodiac signs was the one causing it. Located in A woodcut called
On the Makeup of the Human Body by Andreas Vesalius it demonstrated a more
realistic way of how people actually looked. Instead of showing zodiac signs, they
showed flesh, and bones and real human parts. This evidence changed mans
view of man because they didnt have scientific knowledge to developing enough
scientific knowledge to know the reality of how a human actually looks.
In conclusion, the Renaissance changed the way many people viewed
things. The Renaissance has impacted the way many people think and do things
even to this day. Without the Renaissance, perhaps people wouldnt be as
creative or independent as they are today because everyone would think religion
was the most important thing. Thanks to these changes that occurred people
viewed themselves in a new, different way. The Renaissance has done many
important things for everyone now because without it we would still consider
ourselves not as strong or crucial as religion was so the impact it has made is
huge.
