BackgroundandOverview

Aswriterslearn,work,andgrow,manyofusfindithelpfultoconstructatheoryofwriting.Foryour
thirdprojectandasanimportantpartofyourfinaleportfolioyouwillhavetheopportunityto
constructyourowntheoryofwritingasawayofhelpingyoutochart,analyze,andenrichyourown
writing.Thistheoryshouldbedevelopedfromyourliteracypracticesthroughoutthecourseand
beyond.

Inthisshortessay,youwillreflectonyourdevelopmentasareader,writer,andcriticalthinkerand
explainhowyourlearninghasledyoutoaspecifictheoryofwriting.Yourtheoryshouldbeinformed
byyourliteracypracticesandthelearningoutcomesofthecourse.Itshouldalsosuggesthowyour
priorexperienceswithwritingwillprepareyouforsuccessfulengagementinfuturepersonal,
academic,professional,andcivicoccasionsforwriting.Yourreflectionandtheoryofwritingshouldbe
supportedbyconcreteevidence(i.e.quotes,examples,screenshots,anecdotes,and/orother
examples)fromyourownworkandcomposingpractices.

RequirementsandDeliverables

1.

Youressayshouldincludeathesisthatmakesaclaimaboutwhatyouunderstandtheactof
writingtobe,andyouressayshouldbeorganizedinsuchawaythatareadercanfollowyour
thinkingandreasoningfromparagraphtoparagraphandwithineachparagraph.

2.

Yourtheoryofwritingshouldillustrateyourcurrentstruggles,accomplishments,andabilities
asareader,writer,andcriticalthinker.

3.

Youressayshouldrelateyourwritingandyourwritingprocesstoonebulletpointofeachof
thefouroutcomeareasofthe
WPAOutcomesStatement
(i.e.RhetoricalKnowledge,Critical
Thinking,Reading,andComposing,etc.).Additionally,youshoulddiscusshowyouusedoneof
theHabitsofMindfromthe
FrameworkforSuccessinPostsecondaryWriting
toachieveoneor
moreoftheWPAOutcomes.

Youshouldsupportyourclaimsaboutwritingwithspecificandconcretereferencestoyour
ownwork(i.e.notes,processwork,passagesfromyouressays,projectreflections,Writers
Journals,feedbackonyourpeer'swork,etc.).Thissupportmighttaketheformofquotes,
screenshots,excerpts,narratedexamples,peerreviews,anecdotes,etc.

5.

Yourtheoryofwritingshouldconcludebysuggestinghowyourgrowthasareader,writer,and
criticalthinkerthroughoutfirstyearcompositionpreparesyouforfuturepersonal,academic,and
professionalwritingandresearchprojects.


6.

Withinyouressay,youshouldnotmerelyprovidesupport;instead,youshouldexplainwhat
yoursupportissupport
for
andhowthatsupportworks.

7.Yourcompletedessayshouldhaveatitleandbeapproximately1700wordsinlength.
