2014-2015 Annual Report

Aloha!
The school reached its seventh year milestone
in the 2014-2015 school year with 27 students
and 5 staff members.
Highlights of this school year included receiving the State Children Youth Day Hero Award
for the ongoing Plant Your Butts Here project.
All students received special medals designed
by artist, Wyland, and even performed at the
special ceremony and banquet held on October 11 at the Dole Cannery. Another highlight
was sending the Butterflybotics robotics team to
Louisville, Kentucky for the 2015 World Championship.
The school continued to refine and enrich its
curriculum. A new S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math) curriculum
was integrated into the core academic offerings. Four one week S.T.E.A.M. modules were
planned throughout the school year for students to be involved in a week long learning
module which focused on the engineer design
process and sharpened critical thinking skills.
From building bridges, towers, and rollercoasters, students were actively involved in hands-on
learning projects that covered various skills in
science, technology, performing arts, visual arts
and language arts.
Two sixth grade students graduated at the end
of the school year. Both graduating students
were longtime students in the program. Adia
was a Huakailani student for five years and
Jordyn attended for three years. Adia was accepted at SEEQS - School for Examining Essential Questions of Sustainability and Jordyn was
accepted at Mid-Pacific Institute for Seventh
Grade Middle School.

Huakailani School for Girls uses a powerful education formula that enables students to thrive, excel and grow in school
and beyond. A major part of that formula is S.T.E.A.M. Science,
Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math are integrated
into the curriculum for all grades, from K-6. Combining the latest innovations in technology and education with a girl-centered focus equips students with a strong academic foundation and gives them the tools to move on to their top Middle
School choices with confidence.
The school, limited to only 27 students, may be small, but its
doing big things! Huakailani School has grown an urban garden thats raised and released over 300 monarch butterflies,
has become a food-waste free school, and has developed
a project that has removed thousands of cigarette butts from
the local water system.
The school is also home to an award-winning robotics program. Last summer, the Huakailani Butterflybotics VEX IQ Robotics Team took home the Design Award at the VEX International Summer Games!
Every year, Huakailani Girls are making their mark in the community and growing in leaps and bounds. Huakailani School
for Girls provides the right resources, an encouraging environment, and opportunities to excel, and watches their girls soar!

VEX IQ Robotics Program

The school robotics program had a very successful second season. The school expanded into two robotics
teams for Grades 3-4 (Team 146B) and Grades 5-6 (Team
146H) Both teams did very well throughout the season,
winning numerous awards.
A team of 3 students even attended the VEX IQ World
Championship in Louisville, Kentucky in April 2015.
The Design Award recipient demonstrates the ability to
implement the most effective and efficient robot design
process. Their Engineering Notebook and discussion with
the judges will demonstrate the teams ability to produce
a quality robot with minimal adult assistance. Key criteria:
Engineering Notebook is a clear, organized, and complete document of the robot design process. Team demonstrates effective management of skills, time, and material resources. Students understand and explain how they
developed an effective game strategy and robot design.
Students understand and explain how they worked together to design, build, and program their robot.
The Energy Award is presented to a team that displays a
high level of enthusiasm and passion at the event. Key
criteria: Team maintains a high level of excitement and
energy throughout the event Teams passion for robotics

I love Huakailani because, I think it is the best

school everybody is nice and nobody is a bully.
The second reason why I love this school is
because I get to do challenging things.
The third reason is because
we always get to have
a little fun in every activity!
Service Learning Projects
By participating in environmental education and service learning projects such as Adopt-a-Block and
Plant Your Butts Here, Huakailani students, parents, and teachers are enthusiastic leaders of the community.
The school has been stewards of the community for 6 years with the City and County of Honolulus Adopta-Block program. They removed 3,255 improperly disposed cigarette butts during the school year.

Children Youth Day Hero Award

The community service project that these girls implemented and now lead and maintain, started out as
an idea when they were in third grade (they are now
5th and 6th graders). The project is called "Plant Your
Butts Here". Since 2010, when the first seven Cigarette
Butt Planters were place in the Kailua community, the
girls have helped remove over 10,000 cigarette butts
polluting the area. The project encourages smokers to
"plant their cigarette butts" in the planters and not improperly disposed on the ground where cigarette butts
cause toxins leach into the groundwater system, kill
native birds and become eyesores to the community.
The girls, who are now in Grades 5 and 6, not only continuously monitor and replace old planters and add
new ones, they personally go around and clean out
the planters on a weekly basis and remove improperly
disposed butts from the area four times a year. They
have stayed committed to the project for four years
and even give up recess to complete community service tasks!

School Urban Garden

School gardens are a wonderful way to use the yard as
a classroom, reconnect students with the natural world
and the true source of food, and teach them valuable
gardening and agricultural concepts and skills that integrate several subjects, such as math, science, art,
health and physical education, and social studies, as
well as several educational goals, including personal
and social responsibility.
The schools Urban Garden Club run by the fifth and
sixth graders sells vegetables from the garden in a mini
school market day to parents and visitors. The club
uses money raised by sales to purchase seeds, soil,
and plants for the garden.

2015 MOA Children's Painting Contest

"Beauty Through the Eyes of our Children"

Two Huakailani students artworks were selected for
the MOA Children's Painting Contest, "Beauty Through
the Eyes of our Children" Exhibit.
The paintings were on display from April 10th - April
12th at Windward Mall and also at the State Exhibition
from May 30th - June 6th at The Honolulu Museum of
Art.

6th Annual Nutcracker

Musical Performance
The annual Nutcracker Performance in December is
an extravagant show. Each student takes on two roles
in the musical, with many of the roles being traditional
for each grade level. This allows students to look forward to growing from being a mouse in kindergarten
to playing a lead role as Clara in fourth grade. Performing arts education is a hallmark of the school. It
aids child development through social skills, discipline, memorization, building a strong work ethic, selfesteem, performance skills, and an appreciation for
physical fitness.

2016 Father-Daughter Butterfly Ball

Disco Theme

The 2015 Ball was a Disco Ball! The Disco Ball theme
brought together fathers, uncles, grandpas and girls
together for a night of groovy outfits and dancing. In
addition to raising $3,279 for the schools enrichment
programs, the event also teaches young girls what it
means to be treated with love and respect. The goal
is that fathers will continue to be positive role models
and that these girls will have healthy relationships as
teens and adults as a result.

I love Huakailani because of the advanced

learning system. It's amazing how I can be in a
regular 5th grade math class and still be in advanced language arts! I also love how all of the
different grade levels can communicate so well!
It's like age doesn't matter!
