HOW AND WHY ARE

SPREADSHEETS USED
Computer models of mathematical data, such as
budgets, accounts and cost modelling are usually
created using a spreadsheet application like Excel,
they are used to perform calculations on the data
entered in each cell.
A spreadsheet appears as a grid, each row has its own
number and each column its own letter. This method is
used to give each column and row its own data.

EXAMPLE
SPREADSHEET 1
How the spreadsheet is
used
The spreadsheet is used to produce the data from
the sales of the production of the t-shirts. Its used to
produce data about total profit made, total income
and costs.

Audience:
Input: The budgeter of this spreadsheet will input
the data.
Output: It will then be accessed by any 2nd or 3rd
party member who will need this information.

Purpose:
The purpose of this spreadsheet is to produce data
about stock and sales of t-shirt production. It
produces information of costs and profits made.

Audience:
The budgeter will input the data of the costs and
profits, a 3rd party will be able to access this data.

Features

The features of this

spreadsheet is that it relies
heavily on formulas to be able
to input the correct
information and data.
This spreadsheet uses cells to
produce final amounts. In
order to find the total amount
cost you would select certain
cells and produce the final
cost by using the formula
(=add). You can also find the
total income of products by
using the formula (e(c-d).

Strengths

1.
2.
3.

The strengths of this spreadsheet is its clear

and concise ability to produce data.
It inputs data in each cell to then produce a
finalising result.
The cells are colour coded to be able to
define the separate cells.

Weaknesses

1.

Its weaknesses are its quite overbearing

amount of data.

2.

Its subtitles are rather small and could stand

out more.

EXAMPLE
SPREADSHEET 2
How the spreadsheet is
used
Purpose:
The purpose of this spreadsheet is to produce data about the test
results of a class of pupils.

Audience
Input:
The teacher inputs and records the data
and information. They calculate the
highest, lowest and average results.
Output
The data is read by and 2nd or 3rd party
member like students or other teaching
staff.

Purpose
The purpose of this spreadsheet is too produce
data about a set of students results.

Audience

Input: A teacher will input the

data to give a finalising result.

Features used
1.

Feature

The features of the spreadsheet

are its ability to calculate results
within each cell. It inputs data
such as average, lowest, highest
and most common grades.
In order to produce the data
formulas are used to produce
results. These are calculated by
using these formulas average is
calculated (=average), highest is
calculated using the formula
(=max), lowest is calculated
(=min) and finally modal result
is calculated with the formula
(=mode).

Strengths

Weaknesses

1. The strength of this spreadsheet is its ability to

calculate information into a finalising result.
2. Its colours coded, this defines each cells and result.
3. The data is well organised and the results have been
calculated using formulas, this makes the data clearer
and easier to read.

1.

Its weakness is that when you publicise the

scores you cant go above 10 which could
give a incorrect result.
