Lagu: Philip P. Bliss (1838-1876)
Horatio G. Spafford adalah seorang pengacara di Chicago pada tahun
1874. Ia dan keluarganya adalah anggota Fullerton Avenue Presbyterian
Church. Spafford dan keluarganya telah mempelajari arti percaya
sepenuhnya pada Tuhan pada setiap situasi. Pertama anak laki-laki satusatunya meninggal dan pada 1871 sebagian besar milik pribadinya terbakar
pada saat kebakaran besar di Chicago. Tetapi pencobaan terbesar terjadi
pada tahun 1874. Ny. Spafford dan keempat anak perempuannya
menumpang kapal Perancis Villa de Havre dalam perjalanan mereka ke
Inggris. Tetapi tak lama setelah meninggalkan pantai Irlandia kapal itu
tenggelam dan 226 penumpangnya meninggal. Horatio akhirnya menerima
sebuah telegram yang dikirim isterinya. Di situ tertulis selamat sendirian.
Ketika ia menuju ke Inggris untuk menghibur isterinya, ia memperoleh
kekuatan dari Tuhan melalui ayat, Segala sesuatu untuk mendatangkan
kebaikan bagi mereka yang mengasihi Dia (Roma 8:28). Ia kemudian
menuliskan syair himne kita ini It Is Well with My Soul (semuanya baik
dengan jiwaku). Lagunya digubah oleh Philip Bliss.

Pada 1913, Rev. George Bennard, seorang penginjil gereja Methodist/
Episcopal berdoa untuk memperoleh pemahaman penuh tentang salib dan
rencananya dalam Kekristenan. Selama suatu jangka waktu ia mempelajari
makin dalam dan dalam tentang salib. Ia berdoa dan bermeditasi pada salib
Kristus, hingga pada suatu hari ia dapat berkata, Saya melihat salib Kristus
seolah-olah saya melihat Yohanes 3:16 meloncat keluar dari halaman
Alkitab, mengambil bentuk dan tindakan tentang arti penebusan. Dari
pengalaman itu dan pengalaman lain dalam hidupnya ia menuliskan syair
