EDITING BOOKLET

Ben OBrien

Import and Storage

There are several different programmes that can be used to

edit footage such as Adobe After Effects, Premier and Sony

Vegas Pro 12 , which one you should use depends on your
personal preference. For our production we decided to use
mainly Sony Vegas pro 12 and Adobe After effects.
We decided to section off several parts of the music video and
work on them individually before putting them together.
The first stage of creating our music video was to transfer all
footage from any Cameras & SD cards to a computer or a safe
hard drive. Using a HDD allows you to edit the footage on
several different devices. Once all the footage was transferred
over, we looked through them to find the right shots to
complete the music video.

Warp Stabiliser
The footage is then put in to After Effects ready for any editable

imperfections, such as unsteadiness and bumps, which may have occurred

when filming.
To correct this we used filter effect called Warp Stabiliser this is used to
warp parts of the video to hide any flaws but it may result in some parts of
video may looking out of place, for example this is commonly happens to
the shadows in the video. However as a glide cam was used there was very
little needed to be done.

Controlling the pace

Once any imperfections are corrected using After effects, the

shot is inserted into the timeline of the music using Sony Vegas
drag and drop feature. Each shot is then shortened, extended
or slowed down to in order to accommodate for the timing,
pace and tone of the song.
This is done by holding down Control and extending the
footage to slow it down or shortening the footage to speed it up.

Cutting to the beat

We then inserted markers to highlight the points at which the scene would

change this made it easier for us to edit in time with the music this is
cutting to the beat.
This is done by pressing M at the correct time. We then repeated this
process throughout the video, depending how much editing is needed for
each shot.

Colour correction
The next step is colour correction. This means changing the colour

temperature of the video to ensure that it suits the type of feeling we

are trying to achieve in the video, in this case we were aiming to
convey sadness, regret and the feeling of distance.
This is done by clicking the Video FX tab and selecting colour
correction and changing the temperature to the desired parameters.

Text message overlay

At this stage we started editing the text message overlay. The process

was more complex then the previous editing as it includes calculations,

custom movements and small coding, which mainly occurred during
shape movement.
Once the overlay was complete we exported the footage using a more
professional programme algorithm on Adobe After Effects to ensure a
professional look was achieved.
