    Thetextispersuasiveinthesensethatwerealize,whenwereadsomethingthatshows
    evenabitofviolencefromawomenweareautomaticallyleadtoquestionwhattragiceventthis
    womenhadtoencounterinordertogetoutofthefragilestatethatwearesobrainwashedto
    categorizewomenintoandstepintothestateofactuallyspeakingonatopicthatdoes

    demonstrateviolence.Weareleadtobelievethattherearedesignatedtopicsthatwomenmay
    speakaboutandviolenceisntone,violenceisdesignatedtomen,formentoportraytheir
    masculinityandinorderforwomentokeeptheirfemininitytheymustunderstandtostayaway
    fromtopicsthatmayincludeviolence.Butisntthisunderstandableforawomanwhohasgrown
    upseeingthetragediesofworldwar2?
    JoyceOateswasbornonJune16,1938.ShewasraisedduringWW2andgrewupseeing
    theKoreanWar,ColdwarandVietnamwar.Herworkisconcernedaboutthesingularpowerof
    one'sself,andthehighcostofthestruggleforautonomy.InaneveningtalkatChapmanOates
    saysIamafeminist,asaremostwomenwhohaveanykindofinterestinaprofessionalcareer.
    Butsheaddedthatsheisnotafeministwhofeelshostiletowardsmen.Thisisunderstandable,
    shegrewupinNewYorkCitythroughalotofcivilrightsandwomen'sliberationmovements.
    ShewritesforthegenerallyliberalbiasNewYorktimes,beingfeministshouldbeacceptedin
    heroccupation,sheevenwrotethistowardtheendoftheERAmovement.However,whenOates
    isaskedwhyherwritingisviolentsheisoffendedbecausethequestionposesassomethingthat
    stereotypeswomen.Thequestionisalwaysinsulting.Thequestionisalwaysignorant.The
    questionisalwayssexist.ThereadersofherwritingmostoftendonotrealizethatwhatJoyce
    Oatesistryingtorepresentthroughherwritingistherealityofasituation,notthefactthatitis
    writtenafemale,thatwritingingeneralshouldberegardedasgenderless.
    Thegeneralizationthatwomenswritingshouldbetranscendingbutlimitedandabstain
    fromanyintensityandaggressivenessissomethingshedoesn'twantpeopletolookto.She
    believesthatalthoughshemaybeawoman,herwritingshouldnotbelimitedtohersex,it
    shouldnotbelimitedtoadegreebecausetheamountofviolence.WhatOatesbelievesisthat
    writing,nomatterthesexofthewritershouldstaytruetothatwriterandthatsheshouldntbe
    criticizedfortheviolenceofherwriting.
