TheFriendsofthePotlatchLibraryisasmall,nonprofitorganizationcommittedto
supportingandimprovingthePotlatchLibrarythroughlocalvolunteerism..Duringtheirnearly
twodecadesofcommunityservice,theFriendshaveraisedawarenessoflibraryprogramssuch
astheSummerandWinterReadingPrograms,supportedthelibraryfinanciallythroughyearly
fundraisers,andorganizedcommunityeventssuchastheannualDinnerTheatretopromotethe
librarysgoalofencouragingtheartsandcultureinPotlatch.

ofyourorganization.
Foroveronehundredyears,thePotlatchLibraryhasbeentheculturalandeducational
cornerstoneofthePotlatchcommunity,providingaplacewherepeopleofallagescangatherto
enjoyuniquePotlatchexperience.AstheprimarysupportorganizationforthePotlatchLibrary,
theFriendsassistthestaffwithplanningandexecutingthelibrarysprograms,themost
prominentofwhicharetheSummerReadingProgram,theWinterReadingProgram,andthe
annualDinnerTheatre.

ThePotlatchSummerReadingProgram,inpartnershipwiththenationalCollaborate
SummerLibraryProgram,encourageskidstocontinuereadingduringthesummerbycreatinga
readinglistofsuggestedtitlesandofferingprizesandgiftstochildrenwhocompletecertain
readinggoalsoverthesummer.TheFriendsalsoaddtheirownlocaltwisttotheprogramby
invitingspeakersandperformerssuchasNASAscientists,magicians,andReptileMan,a
localherpetologist,todemonstratethewondersoflearningwhilekeepingkidscomingintothe
library.IncontrasttothekidfocusedSummerReadingProgram,theWinterReadingProgram
caterstotheadultsinPotlatchbyconcentratingonmorechallengingworksandinviting
speakerssuchaslocalauthors,poets,andmusicians.Lastly,theirmostbelovedprogramisthe
annualDinnerTheatre,heldatPotlatchshistoricLogInnCabin.ThePotlatchFriendsDinner
Theatreisaonenightculturaleventthatcombinesgoodcompany,greatfood,andexcellent
performerstocreateafunnightforthewholefamily.

ThePotlatchLibraryistheculturalandcommunalheartofthetown,theplacewhereold
andyoungcometogethertoappreciatetheartsandcelebratetheuniquecultureandhistoryof
thisamazingcommunity.BybringinginspeakersandperformerswhoappealtoPotlatchsrural
setting,theFriendsincreasingcommunalsupportforthelibrarywhileenhancingtheartsand
cultureinPotlatchbyintroducingthemdirectlytothecommunity.

ThePotlatchFriendshaveastrongpartnershipwiththePotlatchArtsCouncil,another
localorganizationwhichassiststheFriendsinplanningthePotlatchDinnerTheatre.The
PotlatchArtsCouncilexclusivelyfocusesoninvitingartists,entertainers,andmusicalgroupsto

performinPotlatch.WhiletheydofillamuchneededroleinthePotlatchcommunity,the
PotlatchArtsCouncilonlyplansonedayeventsorperformances,whiletheFriendsofthe
PotlatchLibraryfocusmoreonorganizingmonthslongprograms,suchastheSummerand
WinterReadingprograms,andonprovidingfundraisingandothersupportspecificallyforthe
Library.

B.PurposeofGrant

1.Situation
TheprimaryproblemfacingtheFriendsofthePotlatchLibraryistheneedtosecurea
relevantentertainergearedtowardsthePotlatchcommunityforthe2017DinnerTheatre.Asthe
Friendsstrategyforincreasingcommunityappreciationfortheartsandculturerelieson
providingentertainmentrelevanttoasmall,ruraltown,theFriendshavedecidedtohireTim
Behrens,starofTheMcManusComedies,aonemanshowthatlampoonshuntingandfishing
culture,toperformattheDinnerTheatre.However,theFriendsdonotcurrentlyhavethefunds
topayMr.Behrensandcatertheeventwhilealsohavingenoughleftoverfortheirother
programsin2017.Toremedythissituationandprovidethecommunitybasedentertainment
thatPotlatchneedstoencouragethegrowthoflocalartsandculture,theFriendsrequesta
$3000granttohelpcoverthecostsofTimBehrensfee.

2.SpecificActivities
TheFriendsofthePotlatchLibraryseek$3000topayforTimBehrensperformancefee
duringthe2017PotlatchDinnerTheatre.WhiletheDinnerTheatrealsoincludespromotion,
catering,andsetup,theFriendsandthePotlatchArtsCouncilwillcoverthesecostswith
donations,volunteerlabor,andthetwoorganizationsbudgets.

3.ImpactofActivities
TimBehrensisoneofthebestsoloactsintheentireInlandNorthwest,withahilarious
actfocusingonfishingandhunting.SecuringhimastheDinnerTheatresentertainerwould
ensureturnoutfortheeventishigh,fosteringaloveforartsandcultureinthePotlatch
community.Mr.Behrenslongtrackrecordofimpressiveperformancescombinedwithasubject
matterthatspeaksdirectlytotheunique,ruralcultureofPotlatchguaranteesasuccessfulevent
suretoattractcommunitymemberstowhatwilltrulybeacelebrationofsmalltownculture.
TheFriendsareestimatingaturnoutbetween3050peoplefortheperformance,roughly
thesameamountasinyearspast.Despiteappearingtobearelativelysmallturnout,50people
outofatownof800actuallyrepresentsahighpercentageofcommunityparticipationandisthe
largestamountofpeopletheFriendscouldservice.

C.Evaluation

1.Howwillyoumeasuretheeffectivenessofyouractivities?
TheFriendsintendtomeasuretheeffectivenessoftheDinnerTheatrebycountingthe
numberofpeoplewhoattend,passingoutsurveysaskingattendeestoevaluatethequalityof

boththeperformanceandtherestoftheevent(thefood,thevenue,etc.),andbysoliciting
suggestionsforwhatfutureperformancesshouldfocuson.Indoingso,theFriendswillmeasure
bothqualitativelyandquantitativelythelevelofinterestsPotlatchhasinTimBehrensandhis
smalltowncomedyact.ThiswillenabletheFriendstoeitherbooksimilarperformersforfuture
DinnerTheatresortoseekoutdifferentactsthatmightbetterappealtothePotlatchcommunity.

2.Defineyourcriteria(measurable,ifpossible)forasuccessfulprogramandtheresultsyou
expecttohaveachievedbytheendofthefundingperiod.
Ultimately,thesuccessorfailureofthe2017DinnerTheatrewillbebasedonthelevelof
interesttheeventgeneratesinPotlatchartsandculture.Therefore,highturnoutandhigh
satisfactionratesfromtheaudiencearetheprimarycriteriaformeasuringasuccessfulDinner
Theatre,astheywouldindicatethePotlatchcommunityparticipatedintheeventandhadan
enjoyableevening.Bytheendofthefundingperiod,theFriendshopetohaveincreased
communityinterestinthePotlatchLibraryandtheartsandcultureingeneral,pavingthewayfor
moresuccessfuleventsinthefuture.

3.Whowillbeinvolvedinevaluatingthiswork(staff,board,constituents,community,
consultants)?
Themainevaluatorforthisevent,asitisforallcommunityevents,willbethecommunity
memberswhoattend,andthisisthegrouptheFriendsaregoingtopaythemostattentionwhen
planningforfutureDinnerTheatres.TheFriendswillalsoholdameetingtodiscussamongst
themselveswhatwentrightandwhattheyneedtofix,aswellastoconsidersuggestionfrom
boththecommunityandtheFriendsforentertainerstoinviteinthefuture.

4.Howwillevaluationsbeusedtoimproveyourprogram?
WhentheybeginevaluatingtheDinnerTheatre,thefirstthingtheFriendsintendtodois
reviewhowmanycommunitymembersattendedtheevent.Iftheyfallshortoftheirexpected
attendanceorfailtodoaswellastheyhope,theFriendswouldlikelytakethisasasignalto
eithercompletelychangetheformatoffutureDinnerTheatresortocanceltheevent.
Assumingthatagoodnumberofpeopleattend,however,thentheFriendsintendtouse
thefeedbackfromthemembersandfromthecommunitytodecidewhetherornottoinviteTim
Behrensnextyearorfindsomeoneelse,whatfoodanddrinkstoserve,whetherornotthey
shouldchangethevenue,andhowtobetterorganizeandadvertisetheeventinthefuture.
