He began college locally at Northern Stare University, and then went on to study music and composition at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Upon graduation he entered the Armed Forces and became ‘an arranger with the prestigious United States Army Band ih‘Washington, D.C. It was there that he began ‘writing arrangements and compositions for the nation’s major music publishers. Upon his discharge, Cacavas moved to New York and began pursuing his career in earnest, continuing his composing and arranging. He served as an assistant conductor at CBS under the tutclage of the esteemed Alfredo Antonini, and worked dlosely with Morton Gould. In 1970, he and his family moved to London, where he became established as a film composer. Three years later, he relocated his family to Beverly Hill, where he became a full-time composer for feature films and television. Cacavas has written extensively for television, including scoring for Kojak and Hawaii Five-O, and writing for countless others. ‘Aside from films, Cacavas has been active as a guest conductor. In addition, his works have been performed by ‘many major orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Boston Pops, and the San Francisco Symphony. ‘Cacavas has been a leading figure in the Ametican school music field for many years. His published educational ‘works total aver two thousand in the areas of symphonic band, orchestra, chorus and chamber works. In recognition of his musical expertise, he has been invited to guest lecrure and conduct seminars around the country. ‘Asa songwriter, his most recent collaboration has been with lyricist Hal David and they have two CDs currency in release. Musical honors include two Emmy nominations. He was awarded the Northwestern University’s Distinguished Alumni Award and received an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Northwestern State University. Cacavas is presently a member of the Motion Picture Academy's Executive Music Commiteee and hhas served as a governor of that organization. He has been a member of ASCAP’s Board of Review and most recently on the Board of Directors. Program Notes Pyotr I'yich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) is one of che most popular composers ofall time. He was successful in virtually all gentcs; symphonic, opera, chamber and liturgical music. A master of melody and orchestration, his music contains some of the most recognized melodies throughout the world. Although he was not considered pare of the Russian nationalistic movement, Igor Stravinsky considered Tchaikovsky “the most Russian of us all.” “This musical portrait contains some of his best loved melodies; Marche Slav (measure 1-45], the main theme from the ballet Suan Lake [measure 46-71] and the waltz from the ballet Sleeping Beauty [measure 76~ 122] Performance Suggestions ‘The opening melody ftom Marche Slav should be performed in a dramatic separated style. Care should be taken to make sure that the low brass melody is not over balanced by the accompaniment. Conerast in measure 17 will be achieved by careful attention to the dynamics and legato style. The tuba notes in measure 46 should be performed in a light styc in the manner of a pizzicato string bass. The oboe solo can be played cither the alto sax or the horn at the discretion of the conductor. Careful balance of the woodwind chords in measure 54, both with in those sections and with reference to the sustained brass chords, is essential. The waltz at ‘measure 72 is indicated as onc beat per measure. It may be helpful for the conductor to conduct the four ‘measure introduction in three, changing to one at measure 76. The waltz should be performed in a light, ling style, building ro a dramatic statement of the theme by the full ensemble at measure 108. The horn after beats are important component and should be present even in the fall ensemble.
