    inmildwinterclimatesinFallandearlyspringfrommailordercatalogs.
    Ranunculusleaves,grassgreenandvaguelycelerylike,growinamound6to12inchesacross.
    Flowerson12to18inchstemsemergeinMarchfromfallplantedbulbs,JuneandJulyfrom
    springplantedbulbstheylastuptosixweeks.Onthemostcommontype,theTecolotestrain,flowers
    aremostlyfullydouble,3to6incheswide,andavailableinbicoloredpicotee,gold,pastelmix,pink,red,
    rose,salmon,sunsetorange,white,andyellow.ThelesscommonBloomingdalestrainisshorter,to10
    inches,withpaleorange,pink,red,yellow,andwhitedoubleflowers.

    Broadlyspeaking,ranunculusarefrosthardycoolseasonperennials.Theyperformbestwherewinters
    arerelativelymildandspringsarelongandcool.Therootstoleratesoiltemperaturesto10F,while
    growingplantscanhandletemperaturesbelow20Fforseveralhours.
    RanunculusaremostpopularinthemildwinterregionsoftheSouthandWest,instatessuchas
    California,Nevada,Arizona,NewMexico,Texas,andLouisiana(USDAHardinessZones8through11),
    wheretheygrowbest.PlantedthereinOctoberorNovember,theyflowerinMarch.
    Theclawlikebulbs,morecorrectlytubers,comeinfourgradesorsizes.Thelargest,calledjumbos,are
    theonesyoushouldrelyupontheyareatleast7to8centimeters(23/4to31/8inches)in
    circumference,orabout7/8inchindiameter.Numberonetubersareslightlysmaller,6to7centimeters
    (21/4to23/4inches)numbertwosare5to6centimeters(2to21/4inches)andnumberthrees,
    whicharerareatretail,are3to4centimeters(11/8to21/4inches).
    Bulbsizepredictsthenumberofflowers.Eachjumbobulbwillproducesome35cuttableflowers,
    comparedtoafifthasmanyfromanumberthreebulb.Numberoneswillmakeabout20flowers,
    numbertwosadozenormore.Sticktojumbosforcontainersandmostsmallerplantings.Smaller
    numbertwosoreventhreesservewellformassplantings.
    Atretailnurseriesthisfall,youcanexpecttopayabout50centsforeachjumbobulb,25centsfor
    numbertwos.Increasingly,nurseriesalsoofferranunculusinfallorspringasbeddingplantsin4inch
    pots.Whilethecostperbulbinpotsisgreater,thisisagoodoptionifyouneedonlyafewplantsfora
    container.
