1. For someone working in your field, please describe the fantasies versus realities of the job.
(fantasy vs. reality)
Fantasy- Insurance companies would not have a phone waiting time and you could speak to someone
live rather than a computer. Insurance claims would get paid in a fast turnaround period. All patients
would be in a good mood and we would finish work on time.
Reality- Insurance will have me on hold for long periods of time Insurance companies are always
needing lots of documentation and do not pay claims in a timely manner. Some patients come
into the office in a bad mood and complain about everything. It would be nice to finish on time,
but we care about our patients, and will stay as long as needed.

2. What is your current educational level? What continuing education and training are required?

I have a Bachelor of Science in Education, but currently help in the office as Office Manager.
We must have CPR training and attend workshops from Insurance Companies.

3. Please describe the typical day to day activities of someone working in your field.
(day-to-day activities)
All mail must be checked, insurance claims must be organized and matched to the patients
claim. Information and insurance pay must be recorded in the patients chart as well as
the computer. If there is a dispute with a claim, I must call the insurance company and
try to fix the problem.

4. How secure are you in your current position? What do you think is the future of your field?

I feel pretty secured about my position. I have been doing this for 21 years. A medical/dental office will
always need someone to take care of insurance matters.

5. What is a typical (average or lowest to highest) salary of someone working in your field?
(salary)
Someone starting new in this position will most likely start at around 9.50 an hour. Someone with
experience will probably get around 12.00 an hour. It also depends on how many doctors work in the
office. Usually you can make a little more money in an office with several doctors, but the
workload is more too. If you can get to 15.00 an hour, then thats considered pretty good for
this position.
6. What potential for growth is there in your field?

Potential growth would include more vacation days, better Christmas bonus, and better pay.

7. What is the most frustrating thing about working at the office?

Not being able to socialize more with people can be frustrating. A lot of time is spent
being on the phone with Insurance companies.

8. What is the hardest year or section of school for someone in your profession?
I didnt find school hard. I guess I always stayed on task and never stayed behind.
If you can do that, then school and exams wont be as hard as it seems.

9. If you were to do it all again, would you wish to be in the same position you are now?
I probably would go back to teaching. I wouldnt change the times I was able to stay home
with my kids, but I would prefer to go back to teach and have the same school calendar as my
kids.
10. Do you enjoy your job? What are some good and/or bad things about your job?
I do enjoy my job. It gives me the flexibility to work from home sometimes. I do have to
go to the office to complete my job duties, but overall its nice to be able to do the work
either at home or office.
