Reflection Connecting Outcomes,

Standards, and Artifacts
I have learned through several projects
and activities that effectively managing a
school library media center program
involves successfully meeting the
various needs of the learning
community. The Budget proposalactivity provided me with knowledge
and a deeper understanding of how a
media centers budget is funded,
constructed and distributed. I was able to
learn the importance of having a wellplanned budget proposal that included
justification of how every penny will be
used to support the mission and goals of
the media center in addition to
supporting the instructional goals of the
entire learning community.
The Floor Plan and The Media
Centers Handbook allowed me the
opportunity to look at the Media center
from a holistic point of view. The floor
plan made the term Library as Place
more relevant. Through this activity I
was able to design spaces that can
function according to the needs of the
community that I service. I am now

equipped with the knowledge of how to
design spaces that encourage learning.
The School Library Media center
Handbook taught me how to examine
policies and procedures of the SLMC. In
reflecting, I appreciate the structure that
was provided in completing this
assignment. I like the idea of
collaborating with my team member on
this handbook project. Together we
collected valuable information from our
media specialists bringing together
differences as well as similar approaches
that are used in school library media
center administration. We were also able
to ponder over all information deciding
what would be useful and effective in the
development of policies and procedures
that would serve as a guideline to
servicing our teacher/learning
community.

The Principal Power Point. This

activity has provided me with the
research knowledge on the value of a
strong media center program and an
active SLMS. This project will serve as
a great advocacy tool. I have learned
that there is much work to be done in
raising awareness among administrators
concerning the value of a school library
media center and its importance to
student achievement. The outcome for
me was and still remains SLMC
Advocacy. I am determining at every

level and with every opportunity to show
how the SLMC impacts student
achievement.
Overall the following standards were met
through these projects and activities :

Blogging

SLMC
Orientation
Newsletter/Press

Another great example of instruction and

collaboration is the SLMC Orientation
project. As the Media Specialist I learned
that I will need to collaborate with
school administrators and teachers to
determine the best way to deliver the
orientation while ensuring that all
students receive the necessary
information about the services offered
through their SLMC.
The Newsletter, Press Release and
Flyer were all created by me to promote
reading. The usage of these tools will
allow me to promote library programs
and reading throughout the community.
Through my Blogging activity I have
gained an understanding of how to
successfully create a platform where
information technology can be used to
actively engage teachers and students in
a community forum that encourages
information seeking behavior.
Overall the following standards were met
through these projects and activities:
AASL 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 3.2, 3.3.

SLMC Website

Two year Plan

Listserv

Through my research I was able to locate

great resources for a Two Year Plan.
The resources gathered for this plan is
based on programs that can be
implemented by the middle school media
specialist and adheres to the GPS. The
Two year plan provided me with the
ability to construct a curriculum map for
my library program. One that includes
realistic goals and objectives with the
integration of information literacy skills.
SLMC Website is a good example of
how the SLMC can meet the learning
needs of the entire school community in
a medium that is accessible 24 hours
day. Through this activity I gained a
better understanding of how to construct
and design a technical learning tool that
not only provides numerous learning
resources but also promotes reading and
research
Several assignments required the use of
LM_NET Listserv as a resource. I was
able to gain insight and direction
concerning issues centered on media
center administration and the way
different media specialist manage their
school library media centers. This tool is
an effective way to collaborate and
network with the library community
worldwide.

Teacher
Book Talk
The Digital Story
Tech Tip Podcast

I was able to gain valuable teaching

skills through the projects and activities
completed in this area. Overall, I learned
how to be an effective instructional
partners and collaborator. The Book
Talk method allowed me to present
books to different groups of students in a
creative manner. I was able to
collaborate with the teacher and design a
lesson plan that supported the
curriculum. In addition, I learned how to
critically assesses and evaluate my
lesson and student learning.
The Digital Story encompassed several
valuable skill sets and teaching
techniques. I had the opportunity to
create a lesson plan that also included the
design and creation of a video. This
project showed me how a lesson plan
should be multi-facet with consideration
given to the various learning styles of all
students. Through this experience where
I learned how to effectively integrate
instructional technology.
Through the Tech Tip podcast I learned
how to explore current technologies to
determine which technology can be best
used for a particular lesson and secondly
one that can be used to meet the diverse
learning needs of all students.
Overall the following standards were met
through these projects and activities:
AASL 1.1, 1.2, 2.3, 3.2 , 5.4
