Shakespeares Message of Love
1. In this play Shakespeare tries to really express a message about love towards the
audience. Even though this story has magical fairies in it, it has a real meaning. Love can
sometimes be crazy, every day, people in the world find out they do not truly love the person
they have married and so they split up. In Shakespeares A Midsummer Nights Dream (p.28)
Lysander says The course of true love never did run smooth. 2. This shows his opinions on true
love and what he is trying to get to the audience which is that no matter what, in love there will
always be ups and downs. This is the point Shakespeare is trying to connect to with the audience.
3. Shakespeare has his own special way of talking about love. Sometimes he makes it
sound romantic and sometimes absolutely horrible. 4. In Midsummer Nights Dream Egeus wants
his daughter Hermia to marry Demetrius who is in love with her, but Hermia is in love with
Lysander, who is another man of Athens like Demetrius. 5. Egeus will not allow Hermia to marry
Lysander so Theseus gives her until his wedding with Hippolyta to decide. Then, Hermia plans to
run away with Lysander the following night. 6. This part of the play I think shows the audience
how when there is something trying to break true love apart, love will do anything to stop it.
Lysander and Hermia have had true love for each other since the very beginning and there is
really no reason behind it. 7. Shakespeare quotes in A Midsummer Nights Dream And yet, to
say the truth, reason and love keep little company together nowadays. (p.88) I think this is true.

He tries to make this point throughout the story that true love doesnt happen through looks but
with the mind. This means when you see someone you truly love you dont only love them for
their looks but their personality and everything about them.
In A Midsummer Nights Dream Shakespeare writes Ill follow thee and make a heaven
of hell, to die upon the hand I love so well. (p.62) I think he is trying to say that when Helena
said this she meant that she would love to die by the hand of her lover. This statement by Helena
is hard to understand but Shakespeare is always trying to get a message of love out to the
audience, and it most likely has a meaning behind it. Helena is truly in love with Demetrius and
she shows it throughout the story. The entire story Helena would not give up on trying to get
Demetrius to love her and at the end they do. This shows how Shakespeare might have been
trying to get the message out that in the end true love wont fail no matter how many problems
occur during its lifetime.
