Non-cooperation is a measure of discipline and sacrifice, and it demands respect for the

opposite views (Mohandas Gandhi). Gandhi was a man of India, who born into a Hindu
merchant caste family. At a young age, he wanted a better life for all Indians living in India and
South Africa. He used civil disobedience to influence the minds of the British Empire. Civil
disobedience is a peaceful form of protest, that includes boycotting goods and the refusal to
comply with laws. His goals in using civil disobedience was to create a free India, where all
Hindus and Muslims were unified. Gandhis use of civil disobedience was effective to achieve a
free India, where they were abolished from the rule of the British Empire.
By using civil disobedience, Gandhi was able to expose the brutality of the British
empire. The first time Gandhi was able to reveal this, was when he was in South Africa. It was
done by burning the passes they had to carry around. The man working with Gandhi burnt the
first pass to show they were fighting for equality. The British arrested him, and told Gandhi not
to burn anymore. Gandhi of course did not listen, and he was beat by a British official. For just
burning a piece of paper, he suffered multiple blows to the head by a wooden stick. This act of
brutality was minor compared to the Amritsar Massacre. The Amritsar Massacre was the murder
of peaceful Indians by the British, who were only having a meeting. General Dyer was in charge
of the British army, and he was the one who told the British to start firing. He wanted them to
take their time, so they could kill all of the Indians. The British killed everyone regardless of age
and gender. This massacre occurred just because of a peaceful meeting the Indians were having.
They had no weapons, so the British fired into a powerless crowd. The brutality was
unnecessary and proves Gandhis point that they should not be the rulers of India. Gandhi was
arrested for sedition, and he willingly went to jail. He was brought in front of the judge, and said
he was guilty of the charge. The judge sentenced him to six years in prison. This is unjust,

because a six year prison sentence is not reasonable for sedition. It was just a way for the British
to get rid of Gandhi for a while, so they wouldnt have to deal with him. This irrational rule by
the British, demonstrates how cruel they were to anyone who tried to stand up to them, and it
was also shown with the Salt March. The Salt March was a march to the sea, where the Indians
were going to make their own salt. The British knew ahead of time, and were going to arrest
anyone making it. The Indians did not care. They were going to go to the Dharasana Salt Works
to protest non-violently. Gandhi was arrested the night before, which made them want to
peacefully protest even more. The British officials blocked the gates to get there, and when the
Indians tried to get out in small groups, the British beat them. They were beat with wooden and
metal poles, which caused some people's skulls to fracture. The Indians continued to walk up to
the gates, and the British continued to beat every one of them. The gruesome brutality the
Indians endured from the British, made many countries turn their back on Britain. Everyone
seemed to be questioning whether they should be the real leaders of India, because of their
response to peaceful protests. This is not the type of leaders a country needs. With Gandhi and
the other Indians help, they were able to bring themselves closer to a free India, by revealing the
brutality of the British.
By protesting the rule of the British empire, Gandhi was able to hurt them economically.
This was started when Gandhi was marching with the Indians one day. He pulled the blacks out
of the mines, since he wanted them to march with him. The British told him that they were
contracted laborers and they belonged in the mines. This was hurting British economically,
because if they had no workers, they would get no resources. They needed those to keep India
running. This civil disobedience was causing them to lose money. They were also losing money,
when they arrested Gandhi and other Indians that were protesting. They usually didnt have these

many Indians in jail, so the British needed to pay more money for the prisoners food, shelter,
clothes, and they had to hire guards. Those were extra costs that they had to pay, just for
responding to the civil disobedience the Indians were using. This proves it was effective towards
the cause. Also, the Indians also started to boycott British goods which made them lose money.
This was part of the Free India Campaign, so instead of buying British cloth, everyone spun their
own. This allowed them to use civil disobedience and not accept what was happening. They
ended up boycotting British cloth for eight years. The British must have lost a lot of money
during this time, because cloth is essential in peoples lives, and no one was buying it from them.
The boycotting did its purpose in the campaign. The Indians use of civil disobedience was
effective, since it hurt Britain economically and helped to create a free India.
After countless years of using civil disobedience to stand up against the British, Gandhi
gained a free India. The first steps toward freedom was when Gandhi was invited to a AllGovernment Conference in London. He was asked to be there, to discuss Indias independence.
Although he did not get a free India right away, he was able to take his stand and continue to
influence the Britishs minds. His civil disobedience was effective, since he was finally able to
get somewhere with it. It took several tries to do this, but he had made progress. This lead to the
flags of free India being raised. The flags of free India and Pakistan were raised in 1947. This
marked an end to the British rule. After using civil disobedience for so long, the British were
finally affected. The Indians were finally able to live under an Indian leader. This leader was
Nehru, and he worked close with Gandhi. India was in good hands. Gandhi was able to create a
free India after using civil disobedience, which was a result of him never backing down to the
British empire.
Gandhis use of civil disobedience was effective, because he was able to influence the

minds of the British empire. He did this by exposing their brutality, hurting them economically,
and allowing them to see how a free India would be better for all Indians. Gandhis perseverance
was the core for his great success. He never backed down once, when the British tried to
eliminate the idea of Indias independence. Gandhis use of civil disobedience was effective,
since he was able to acquire a free India under the rule of the Indians themselves.
