Creating the Ideal Buffer
Materials:

4 100ml beakers
burette
burette clamp
ring stand
magnetic stirrer
magnetic stirring pill
wash bottle

50ml graduated cylinder

pipet
500 ml flask
1 M HCl
Unknown molarity ammonia
(about 60 mL total)
Methyl red indicator (6 drops
only needed)

Procedure:

Titration

1. Fill a beaker with about 30ml of unknown molarity ammonia

2. Fill a beaker with about 75ml 1M HCl
3. Fill the burette, to the top 0 line, with the HCl (should be 50ml in the burette
total, make sure the burette is thoroughly cleaned with the wash bottle)
4. Set up the burette into the burette clamp on the ring stand
5. place the magnetic stirrer under the burette
6. fill the flask with 15ml of the ammonia (measured out in the graduated
cylinder)
7. place about 2 drops of methyl red in the flask with the ammonia
8. place the magnetic pill in the flask
9. place the flask below the burette on top of the magnetic stirrer and turn on
the stirrer
10.Begin the titration: let the burette drain till yellow BEGINS to turn a pink/red
color, then slow down the burette liquid flow to drops at a time. Stop the
burette when color is permanently changed to pink/red and record how many
mL was used
11.repeat steps 1-10 3 times (record the 3 trials in a data table)
12.calculate the unknown molarity of ammonia for each titration and find the
average

Creating the Buffer

1. after calculations have been made, add 14.6 ml of ammonia in a beaker

(measured by a graduated cylinder)
2. add 8ml of HCl in the same beaker as the ammonia (measured by a
graduated cylinder)
3. repeat steps 1-2 into another beaker, now creating two samples of a buffer
