Everybody Bakes Bread

What concepts or developmental skills will this lesson address?
This lesson will address concepts in social studies, and will allow children to
compare different types of bread and different cultures. It will introduce them to
different kinds of bread and allow them to discuss similarities between cultures.
Children will listen to a Read-Aloud of Bread, Bread, Bread, by Ann Morris and
Ken Heyman, which is an informational books with pictures of bread around the
world. The teacher will give information about the place in the world where each
bread is made, place a pin on a map for every country that is mentioned, and
encourage children to share their knowledge about this country or the specific
type of bread mentioned. They can also share breads that they know about.
Then, children will taste different types of bread that the teacher purchased in
Brooklyn, showing that people from many different cultures live in our city
(baguette, pita, bagel, chapatti, challah, cornbread, concha, focaccia). The
teacher will write them down on the board to help children in their writing, and
students will discuss them as a class, then write down their impressions.

Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation)
Today in Social Studies we are going to do something SUPER exciting! I myself
cannot wait! We are going to talk about a food that I LOVE, and I know you love it
too! For a long time I thought it was a French thing, until I traveled and realized it
was everywhere! It can be found in different shapes and forms all around the
world . It isbread!
We are going to read a book first, then do a special activity that you are going to
love.
Instruction/Mini Lesson
Read-Aloud( 15 minutes): As the teacher reads aloud, she pauses to encourage
children to share what they know about the types of breads and the countries
discussed. She then puts a pin on the map where the countries are.
Bread tasting and discussion (2 minutes per type of bread): So we have seen
that bread can be found all over the world. Do you know of any bread that was
not discussed in this book?
Let me show you one kind of bread that I really love. This is called.
Lets pass the plate around. Who wants to tell me what they think about this
bread?
Ok, great. Now lets try another one. Raise your hand if you love it.
What do we think about these two breads? Who would like to tell me which one
they liked better and why?
I want to use compare and contrast vocabulary such as: I preferred/ I liked/ I
loved/ because/ The best/my favorite
