Introduction: This undergraduate course in Childrens and Young Adult

Literature has a two-fold purpose. As a survey course, it is designed to assist
professionals-in-training in becoming widely acquainted with the great wealth of
trade books available for todays children. An equally important purpose is to assist
future teachers and librarians in critically evaluating these books and using them
throughout the curriculum. In this course an emphasis will be placed on motivating
children to want to read as opposed to making them read.
Objectives: It is intended that undergraduate students in ELED 3320Survey of
Literature for Children and Adolescentsmeet the following major objectives:
To become widely acquainted with the vast amount of literature available for
children and young adults.
To be able to critically evaluate books using specific criteria for each genre.
To be cognizant of the joys and values literature can bring to the child.
To become familiar with the lives and works of major authors and illustrators who
create for children and adolescents.

To become acquainted with and realize the importance of expressed child reading
interests in the creation of a lifetime reader.
To become familiar with, and be able to discuss, landmark documents in the field of
Juvenile Literature Research.

Standards: This course is aligned with the standards of the Association for
Childhood Education International (ACEI). Specifically, this survey course addresses
aspects of Standard 2.1 English language arts: Candidates are familiar with, able to
use, and recommend to students many reading materials based on different types,
including stories, poems, biography, non-fiction, many categories of literature
written for children.
In addition, this course is aligned with the standards of the National Council of
Teachers of English (NCTE). Specifically, this survey course addresses Standard
3.5.2: Works from a wide variety of genres and cultures, works by female authors,
and works by authors of color. Standard 3.5.3 is the core of this course: Numerous
