The major contenders for the prime

ministership were: Stephen Harper (from
the Conservative Party), Justin Trudeau
(Liberal Party), and Tom Mulcair (New
Democratic Party). The other two major
party leaders are Gilles Duceppe (Bloc
Qubcois), and Elizabeth May (Green
Party). The general sentiment around this
election was one of exhaustion from Harper,
who has been in power for nine years.
While the Conservatives tried to justify
their existence, newcomer Justin Trudeau
presented himself as the only alternative to
what he suggested is the corrupt leadership
of Harper. Tom Mulcair, despite performing
very poorly in advance polls and opinion

polls, still insisted that the election was a

three-way race. However, Mulcair was in
a very disadvantaged position, as there is
a pervasive opinion within the NDP that
hes simply unfit to continue the legacy left
behind by the previous NDP leader, Jack
Layton. Hot button issues in this election
included: the economy, the environment, the
Syrian refugee crisis (see above), aboriginal
rights, and electoral reform. The Liberals
started with a strong lead, seeming very
quickly as though they would win a majority
government. Ultimately they maintained
their lead and went on to win the election.

politics

For the second time in six months, Bishop

Carroll students have shown their penchant for
civics by casting student votes in a provincial
election and a federal election. Having the
opportunity to learn about the parties and
cast votes for the candidates gave students
an authentic opportunity that they will soon
have as a right once they turn 18. One of our
students gave this feedback when asked about
the assignment: This assignment was interesting
because I have never been politically aware.
It is strange that I will one day be able to vote
and that my opinion will be called upon to find
a party to make decisions for Canada. This
alternate guide made me more confident in
the issues that I would like to support but also
brought up things that I wasnt even mindful
oftaxes and childcare were discussed and
made me realize their importance. Designing
a learning opportunity for the students was an
easy choice for the teachers. Depending on the
grade level, students worked through electronic
surveys, quizzes, news media panel talks, and
debates to support them in their choice of
candidate and party. Students remarked about
how they realized for the first time that they
actually might have political views they were
unaware of. The Social Studies Department
was able to send one teacher to a Democracy
Boot Camp to support the National CIVIX
voting program that was utilized to carry out the
parallel votes at the Provincial and Federal levels.
One student even remarked how important it
felt to actually go behind the voting screen and
privately select a candidate of her choosing
based on the research that she did in the learning
guide. CIVIX has the students vote prior to the
official election day so that results can be released
with detailed statistical analysis just as soon

as the real results flow to the public. The Bishop

Carroll students mirrored the provincial election
outcome 48 hours before the Alberta citizens
actually voted!
At the Federal level, the results were as follows:
The Liberals won a majority government with 223
seats and the Conservatives formed the official
opposition with 69 seats. The NDP won 40 seats,
and the Greens won 4. The Bloc Qubcois won 1
seat in Quebec.
For a full glimpse and detailed statistics on the
vote please visit:

A New Government for

Canada
On October 19, 2015 the twenty-third prime
minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, was elected
with a majority of seats in the House of Commons.
The Liberal party took a huge number of seats
right off the bat, giving them a huge lead over the
incumbent Conservatives. Their extraordinary
take-over in the medias eyes was almost
unprecedented. Justin Trudeaus party trailed
almost the entire campaign until election night
itself. The Liberal party took the lead with almost
all of Atlantic Canada voting Liberal. It wasnt
until the polls closed in Quebec and Ontario that
the Conservative and NDP started to get votes.
The Conservatives easily took most of Alberta
and about half of BC and Manitoba. The NDP
took half of BC, Saskatchewan and major parts
of Manitoba. The Liberal party took Northern
Canada by storm along with large portions of
the urban areas. This wave of Liberal support
comes after the Conservatives ten year term full
of scandals, like Mike Duffy, and false starts like
the Keystone XL pipeline. The incumbent partys

last campaign was spent trying to convince

Canadians to give them ten more years to make
the change they had been promising for so long.

The change in government has come
too soon for our previous Prime Ministers
liking. Not twenty-four hours after the final
election results were released Stephen Harper
chose to step down from his role as leader of the
Conservative party. Although Harper will be
stepping down from his leadership role he will
remain a MP for his riding. Questions are now
being raised as to who will take over for the face
of the Conservative party. The CBC has tossed
many names around but nobody is sure who
will take over for Harper. On the other hand,
The NDP party leader Thomas Mulcair has for
the moment decided to remain the leader of the
NDP party and continue to rebuild the party
after Jack Laytons death.

In the years to come there will likely
many trials for the new government but they
have four years to prove they can do right by
Canada and their voters. The Liberals have their
chance to make the Real change theyve been
promising, hopefully they dont waste their
opportunity.

Donald Trump, a breath

of fresh air. Time for Some
Mouthwash
...shes a woman, Donald Trump states, referring
to Carly Fiorinas eligibility for presidency. He
continued, and Im not sposedta say bad things,
but really folks, come on. Are we serious?
Sexism, racism, homophobia; Donald Trump has
embodied it all at one point.
A household name, Donald Trump is the
frontrunner for the Republican Party, with
controversial statements that head up his
campaign. Politicians have been campaigning for
months, attempting to earn their way into the
most powerful position in the word. Regardless

of Trumps politics, his demeaning attitude injects

a derogatory approach toward anyone who isnt a
Caucasian man.
Trump, a real estate tycoon, continually emits
offensive and impulsive comments, including
statements such as [Mexicans are] bringing drugs.
Theyre bringing crime. Theyre bringing rapists
and some, I assume, are good people. Or You
look at Baltimore, you look at Cleveland. You
look at all those places, just exploding. We have
an African American President [and] weve never
had it so bad. His narcissism leads him to believe
that the mature response to a woman disagreeing
with him, is to Tweet You could see there was
blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of
her, wherever. (as was done to Fox News reporter
Megyn Kelly). The Presidential hopeful lacks a
verbal filter and directly attacks any group unlike
himself.
Not only does Trump make cruel comments,
but he refuses to apologize. His actions enable
an ideology of segregation, and white male
supremacy. However, many American people
have rallied behind Trump, admiring his honesty,
saying hes a breath of fresh air in a clammy
political realm. Yes, Donald Trump was like fresh
air, but maybe now its time for some mouthwash.
Donald Trumps behaviours are an issue not only
for the American people, but also for those who
interact with the U.S. The United States is the most
powerful country in the world, and our neighbour.
It has more influence on Canada than any other
foreign country. The Presidency isnt an entry-level
job; its a job that needs to be treated with respect
and maturity. Donald Trump is making a mockery,
not only of the electoral process, but of all those
who have struggled for equality. His comments set
us back to a time we dont want to revisit. Its time
Donald Trump went back to the Boardroom and
left the people of North America alone.

Bishop Carroll Soccer 20152016

On October 14th Bishop Carroll wrapped up
another successful season. The Bishop Carroll
Girls soccer team defines success in multiple
ways. Many align success with wins, which they
had many, but in high school sports participation
goes far beyond the number of tallies in the
win column. At the completion of this soccer
season the girls finished with five wins and one
loss. The early quarter final playoff exit brought
the season to a conclusion. It is, however, the
everyday practice, play, and commitment to a
team that ultimately leaves the student-athlete
with experiences for life. Disappointments,
failure, resilience and moving
forward are all experiences that
build character. Sure, the winning
and glory go along with that
sometimes, but real character
is built along the way. Research
tells us that sports and other
extracurricular activities are
more successful than academic
classes in teaching leadership, teamwork, time
management and other skills crucial for success
in the workplace. That is what we want for our
student athletes in the soccer program at Bishop
Carroll. Each year we have been excited to meet
a group of talented young athletes who have
chosen to be self-directed learners and student
athletes. We, as teacher coaches, have chosen to
take on this primary mentorship role in extracurricular sports because we are committed to
being strong role models to the student athletes.
We feel truly blessed to have been able to work
with the girls this year and hope that we have
sent the grade 12s out with key memories from
the season, and hope to see all future Cardinals
come out next year as we build the Cardinal
soccer team for 2016-2017.

Get to Work- Its Prime Time

As of November 2, 2015, only 130/169 school days
remain. If you were to take into account the 25 runs
to Tims (30 min each= 12.5 hours- roughly 2 school
days), the four dentist/doctor/I woke up late mornings
(1 hour each= 4 hours- one whole afternoon), the five
(varying degrees) of sick days its safe to say that we
have approximately 122.5 productive school days left.
At the most. We have been at school for 39 days this
semester, and some of us still arent back into the swing
of things. For those of you new to this school, and for
those of us who havent turned our brains completely
on yet, lets run through some quick-hitters.
Testing Centre:
-Leave your backpack in a cubby in science or in your
locker. Leave your textbooks and notes and data
booklets. You should only have a pencil and an eraser
(and maybe a pencil sharpener for
those of you stuck in the 1870s). This
all seems pretty obvious, but somehow
the testing centre ladies have seen it all
too recently.
-When the staff in the testing centre ask
you what test youre writing, tell them
exactly what it says on your tracking
sheet/test permission. This is how the
test is labeled on the shelf, and it makes
everybodys lives much easier.
-If the testing centre staff ask you whats in your
pockets, or tell you to not to write in the test: listen and
cooperate!
Learning Commons:
-4 bodies/table (if somebody is sleeping, they still
count as a body)
-You are in public. A lot of people can hear you. Lower
your voice or choose a new topic of conversation.
Hallways:
-DO NOT CONGREGATE in the hallways. Its loud,
people cant get where they need to be; it just creates
frustrating situations.
Resource Centres:
-Get to work (quietly). Please. There are kids trying to
graduate all around you.
Library:
-If the librarians ask you to come back through because
you beeped on the way out, do it

A Look into the Life of a

Family Doctor
Interviewee: Lisa Stevenson MD CCFP

1.
How and when did you know you wanted
to be a doctor?
I always liked science, and I wanted to be a
vet for a long time. When I worked for a vet,
however, he told me that human medicine was
the way to go. When I went to university, I kept
my options open, and after talking to a guidance
counsellor about my options, it really appealed to
me to have an actual job at the end of university,
not just a degree where I would have to find a
job, so I applied to medical school!
2.
What steps did you take after high school
to become one?
I went to university, majoring in biology,
then applied to medical school in the middle
of my second year, and got accepted! Part of
the application process required me to take
the MCAT: Medical Colleges Admission Test.
Nowadays, students still need to take the MCAT,
but medical interviews for people trying to
become doctors are so important it stresses
the importance of people skills. Then I did four
years of medical school and passed my LMCC
(License of Medical Counsel Canada finals)
and obtained my official M.D. After that, I did
two years of family practice residency to obtain
my CCFP (Canadian College of Family Practice)
certification.

your profession? What are the parts you like the

least?
Its rewarding for me to see generations of
families put their trust in me. I like having them
listen to my advice and seeing them benefit from
it! I find it frustrating when patients dont follow
my advice, and seek easier ways out, or even if
something happens to them I cant treat.
5.
What kinds of social responsibilities
pertain to being a doctor?
My social responsibility as a doctor would be
to lead by example, to advocate for my patients
needs, obey the Privacy Act concerning my
patients, and to spend healthcare dollars wisely.
6. How long have you been a doctor?
I obtained my medical degree in 1989, so Ive
been a doctor for 26 years.
7.
Overall, how do you like your job and the
responsibilities that come with it?
I love my job! My responsibilities to my patients
and my staff are very rewarding. As with any
job, there are good days and bad days, but I cant
imagine doing anything else.
-Georgia Fraulin

3.
Why did you specialize in family
practice?
During my training in medical school, I liked
everything, but didnt love one specialty in
particular. It also appealed to me to take care of
entire families, and I liked the idea of getting to
know my patients well.
4.

What are the most rewarding parts of

Cats, bats, pumpkins, skeletons and ghosts

galore. Its that time again! Halloween is just
around the corner and I know you all might be
wondering what the coolest Halloween costumes
are, what are some of the best ways to throw
a Halloween party and some of the all time
best Halloween movies. And that is what I will
carefully map out for you all!

Did anyone ever think that dressing up
as a giant smiley face would be a hot costume?
Well this year its all the rage! Some people are
coming up with all different types of ways to
recreate emojis! Through some research (and
just going to Spirit Halloween) I have found that
people in the young adult age range are totally
into dressing up like the dancing girl made
famous by Apple. If you havent quite picked a
costume out yet, dont you worry! There is plenty
of time! I asked a few of my fellow high school
students what they would be dressing up as and
here were some of the answers. There was a Finn
the human (from a TV show called Adventure
Time), a broken porcelain doll (the makeup for
this costume would be so much fun to do), a few
characters from the t.v. show Friends (anyone
for a super cool Chandler Bing costume? Both
retro and squad goals), and some firefighters
and policemen thrown into the mix.

Whatever it is you decide to be, you
can do it expensively or inexpensively. What I
did to recreate my costume (90s groupie) was
to go to Value Village and buy the weirdest
combination of clothing to make an outfit! Same
goes for anything else. If youre crafty, anything is
possible!

As for throwing a Halloween party,
keeping it simple is the easiest. Make it
interesting of course but keeping it under
budget is important! Going to the dollar store
and buying cheap dcor is super in. Also hand
making things are very fun too. There are a ton
of places on the internet where you can look up
ways to create decorations, like hanging bats

-A baby rabbit is called a kit, male and female rabbits are called bucks and does, respectively.
-Both female (called a doe or a nanny) and male (called a buck or a billy) pygmy goats grow horns.
-Sheep and goats can have unlimited peripheral vision, meaning they can see 320 degrees around
themselves; thanks to their rectangular pupils (which also allows them to see well in the dark!).
-Goats, sheep, and many other herbivores only have front teeth on the bottom of their mouths. The top is
a hard palate, which they use to help grind their food. They have a few molars in the back, on the top and
bottom.
-Cows (and therefore possibly cattle in general) can recognize their own name, and respond positively
upon hearing it! Studies show that (dairy) cows are capable of many human emotions, and enjoy being
recognized as individuals. Dairy cows called by their own name have been reported to produce more
milk than a dairy cow that is not recognized.
-Maddy Edwards

Where do sick animals go to? The farm-acy

made out of egg cartons perhaps? Or scary ghosts

made from empty milk jugs! Anything goes, get as
creative as possible!

Now for the best part of Halloween.
Movies. In my opinion, the classics are the best
way to go. My all time favourite is Nightmare
Before Christmas obviously. Its both beautiful
and super adorable! All the songs are perfectly
catchy and ever so creepy. My next fave is Corpse
Bride, its everything. Its also a Tim Burton film
so theres that. If youre looking for something else,
the next one Id suggest is Hocus Pocus. Now this
is a classic. Anyone Ive talked to adores this one.
Then of course there are the horror movies people
enjoy watching. I like to steer clear of those ones.
But if youre into that then there are many to pick
from!

So ladies and gentlemen this is my
Halloween! The bottom line is to be as creative as
you can, and get excited! This time of the year is
both beautiful and spooky. Give it your all because
we are only teenagers for a short while and going
all out is worth it!

An Ode to the Sky

Incredibly indescribable I watched,
That star dance on a field of darkness,
I found it warp fabrics I couldnt touch,
The beams of which descended,
A pillar of its light.
For trickling down the veins of father sky,
Lies light that makes even black obsidian glow,
Freckled and littered with pinprick fluid,
From another realm.
The same sky that brought travelers afar,
A light by which cleansed me of all doubt,
The same sky that brought kingdoms to ruble,
By which stood the only throne divine,
The same sky.
Upon the stillness of Gods black stream,
By which cried upon the heroes of Troy,
Cried upon Helen, taken away by a God,
The eternal eye that watched,
Theseus set sail, watched
Zeno tell philosophical dreams,
The sky that watched,
Pythagoras find the details,
To worship as the picture,
But failed miserably.
The hand that hugged me with its breeze,
Upon days so cold and air thats frozen,
That ate the sunlight and spit out tye-dye,
That made a canvas of my hopes,
In which it painted trees and trees,
And revealed with blue embers;
The abstract.
The silent sounds that made me insane,
The whispers that brought me poetry,
A sky the same, so pure and clean,
The floor of heaven, Gods palace,
My palace.

The only place Ive ever felt,

Truly still in hands secure,

Since childhoods evil wrath,

Taught me to see better days,
I learned to believe in magic,
By the sky (my holy teacher)
I learned to hear the essence,
Of every natural thing.
The sky that fought to keep my dreams,
That stole the logic from my mind,
Built a place for me to wonder,
A place by which I could write my name
In the clouds.
On days that were bleak it foretold misfortune,
On nights that were awesome it foretold strength,
Bringing me to places cold, grassy fields,
Raging hills, hot dense jungles, a puzzle of me,
A self- portrait of me,
That I still lay dumbfounded how beautifully
You drew.
The anger that you melted away on,
Raging of stormy nights
Because no one stood stronger than you
No one was quite so blue.
Perhaps the reason Einstein thought,
That matter and energy where one,
For you are everything not divided
My soul welded to your mystery
I fought with starry eyes.
I fought against earthly tides
For your glory and pride
I fought so that they could understand
What I always saw
My life has been an eternity
By which the heavens float
The darkness calmed me just the same,
Same as your brother
Together you made perfect siblings,
That brought me balance.
So this is for you my celestial armor
My mystical and bright sign
A home worshipped by my soul
Now and for all time

Case 05 The Intruder

Emily was sitting at her study table, home alone,
on a cold and stormy night. Her parents had
taken a flight earlier in the morning to Australia
as her grandmother had passed away. She had
wanted to follow her parents but she had an
important English examination the next day
which she could not miss.

phone, said Emily, with a controlled voice. The

intruder let her go.
Alright, but NO funny business, or ELSE! said
the nervous intruder. Emily walked toward the
phone. She took a deep breath and calmed herself.
She picked up the phone, while resting her hand
lightly on the number pad.
Hey Em! Hows the revision going? said the
caller.

The storm was getting heavier by the minute

and the wind was howling outside. All this noise
made it very hard for her to concentrate. She was
on the verge of dozing off when she was shaken
alert by a sudden THUD! She dismissed it as
a window which had been slammed shut by the
wind.
She tried to concentrate on her books when she
heard faint footsteps. Emily got out of her room
and looked around when suddenly, without
warning, she was grabbed by the neck. She tried
to scream but it came out as a mere whimper as
the intruder was pressing hard against her throat
with his arm. She tried to free herself from his
grip but to no avail.

Hey Anna. Thanks for the call. Hey you know

those Science notes I lent you last week? Well I
really need them back. It would be a great help
to me. Its an emergency, so if you could give me
them tomorrow it would be great. Please hurry in
finding the notes. I need to get back to my books
now. Bye, Emily said. She hung up the phone.

Give me all your money! growled the man who

had grabbed her from behind.

It was wise of you not to say anything, said

the intruder, although he was more than a bit
confused by her conversation.

Th-there is none h-here! Please ll-let me go!

cried Emily.
Dont LIE TO ME! screamed the increasingly
agitated man. She felt the man strengthen his
grip around her neck. She said nothing and a few
seconds passed by in silence. Suddenly the phone
rang which alerted both of them.

to the nearest window and jumped out of it.

KEPT! screamed the thief.
It...its...in my dads room. The first room on the
right. Third drawer, said Emily.
SHOW me! said the man, and removed his grip
around her neck. She took a big gulp of air and
nearly fell. She swallowed hard and said a silent
prayer. She walked slowly, in silence, toward her

Case 06 Another robbery

I dont know how to tell you this, but, um, the safe
has been robbed. The diamonds are gone.

Emily ran outside in time to see the intruder

being escorted into the car. She saw Anna and
she ran toward her and hugged her.

What!? The police chief shouted. You mean the

safe that youve been guarding carefully?

Smart kids, said the policeman.

Thats the one.

What had happened?

But we checked every single space in the building

in which a human being could possibly hide, it
was totally empty. And we had the entire building
completely surrounded, and had every possible
entrance monitored. So surely we know who did it
right? Please tell me we finally caught this guy!

Answer:
Emily had used the mute button during her conversation with Anna so that all Anna heard was:
call...help...emergency...please hurry. Anna,
sensing something was wrong, called the police
and told them Emilys address. The police were
able to come to Emilys house in time to catch the
perpetrator.

How to play: Read the short story below and

end of the story. If you think youve solved the
case, verify your answer with the one listed

Not exactly. By which I mean, no. But we do

have it narrowed down to three suspects this time.
We tracked the entrance and exit of every person
throughout the day, mostly customers of the bank
on the first floor, not realizing we had closed it
down for the day. Only three people were in the
building at the time the safe was robbed. All of
them entered separately on foot.
Wait, how do you know when the safe was
robbed? the chief asked.
Well, you know that one car we told you about
that was already sitting empty in the parking
garage under the building the night before? The
one that mysteriously wasnt registered to anyone?
Well, all of a sudden it came screaming out of the
garage. We probably should have had it towed the
night before, huh? Anyway, we all took off after
it, but when we finally caught up to it, it was on
the side of the road with no one in it. But the felt
bag that held the diamonds was under one of the
seats.
It didnt still have the diamonds in it by any
chance, did it?
Um, no chief. We all just stood there for a minute,
when it suddenly occurred to us that every single
one of us left our posts to chase the mystery car,

so we all raced back to the building only to find

that it was empty. So were not sure which, if any,
of the three suspects was still there when the car
took off.
Wow. All that training has really paid off.
Thanks, chief. So anyway, its not entirely clear
who was involved. But we do know that there are
only those three possible suspects. We tracked
each one of them down, but none of them had
the diamonds on them. Theyre each in an
interrogation room now - Chris Barns, Evan
Garrison, and Jimmy Jones. All three of them
have at least minor criminal records, and all
three are known to be pretty good with a safe.

know where to start!

The chief thought for a moment and said, Well if
everything youve said is true, then I know one of
these guys who is definitely guilty. Lets question
him and see if we can get him to spill whether
either of the other two were involved.
Who is guilty, and how does the chief know?
-Daisy Cruz-Milette

Great. So it could be all of them, or any one of

them. What else do we know about them? the
chief asked.

At least one of the three of them did it. If it was

Evan, then Chris is guilty too, since Evan wont
work without Chris. If it was Jimmy, then he had
to be working with someone else, because he cant
drive, being blind. If he was working with Chris,
then Chris is guilty, if he was working with Evan,
then Chris must have been involved too since
Evan wont work without him, so all three would
be guilty. If neither Evan nor Jimmy were involved,
then Chris would be the only one who couldve
done it. So no matter what, Chris is guilty.

Well, Chris swore he was going straight several

years ago, and he hasnt been suspected of
anything since. Although, he has sworn he was
going straight several times throughout his
criminal career. Evan is known to be a pretty
smooth thief, but its also well known that hes
superstitious and refuses to do any job unless
his mentor Chris is involved. And then theres
Jimmy. Hes the best safe-cracker in the business,
an absolute legend. People say that, being blind,
