Who seems to be Malcom Xs intended audience? How do you know?

Malcoms audience doesnt seem to be geared towards any one person. It

sounds more like hes talking to everyone or a reporter in specific about his
prison success story and how his sponsors during his time in prison led him
to what he was so passionate about which is black privilege. You can tell this
because there isnt a direct intention towards a certain person or a certain
group of people. He is just talking about how he came to find his passion.
How does Malcom X define literacy? How does this definition
compare to school based literacy?
Malcom Xs definition of literacy is an exact comparison to the definition of
school based literacy. He defines literacy as how you speak, the words and
language you use, and your penmanship.
Drawing on the Deborah Brandts definition of literacy sponsor, list
as many of Malcom Xs literacy sponsors as you can find.
(Remember that sponsors dont have to be people, but can also be
ideas or institutions, which can withhold literacy as well as provide
it.) Which sponsors were most influential? What were their
motivations?
Elijah Muhammad
Charlestown Prison
Norfolk Prisons Colony Library
Bimbi

Inmate Debates
The sponsor that seems most influential to Malcom X would be the
Charlestown Prison and the Norfolk Prisons Colony Library. These seemed to
be the most influential to Malcom X because they both allowed him to
improve his reading a writing abilities while he was a prisoner. Their main
motivations were to make him a better person than when he came to prison
and I think they succeeded by distracting him and helping him to improve his
literacy.
Brandt explains that people can often subvert or misinterpret the
intentions of their own sponsors. Was this ever the case with
Malcom X? If so, how?
I dont think Malcom X really misinterpreted the intentions of his sponsors
unless Bimbi would be considered a misinterpretation. Bimbi always made
Malcom X seem uneducated (as he was), but the intention of Bimbi was
never to improve Malcoms literacy.
What was the particular role for writing that Malcom X describes in
his account of his literacy education? How do you think it helped

him read? Can you think of ways that writing helped you become a
better reader?
A particular role for writing that accounts for his literary education is his role
in prison and what he did in that prison. He said he wrote down every word
and its definition in the dictionary. It both helped him understand words
better, so he became a better reader, and it helped with his writing and
penmanship. The only time that I can think writing helped me become a
better reader was when I was writing poetry. I always tried to convey these
obscure and complex emotions through short and simple sentences. This
writing opened up my mind to different meanings in readings that I did and
taught me to think of some tings out of the box instead of just taking it for
the straightforward meaning.

Sponsors of Literacy
Framing the Reading
People dont become literate on their own.
Literacy is sponsored by other people, institutions, and
circumstances.
Not all sponsors open doors to literacy. Some sponsors are self
interested and only care about literacy that pertains to their own goals.
Sponsors can be anyone or anything that has influenced literacy.
The economy during the time of the steam press influenced the
literacy for the print apprentices.
Adversely the steam press ended a form of literacy and dropped the
literate potential.
Literacy was a large component of profit and competition during the
20th century.
People became more literate about the market and the economy
during the time.
The continually growing pace of communication and technology is an
issue for literacy during modern times.
Literacy is directly correlated to sponsors.
Sponsorship
Figures, who are generally more knowledgeable, who pave the way for
students.
People have acquired literacy through others causes.
The protestant church was a large part of early English literacy.
Literacy is a valued commodity in the economy.
People will go to certain lengths to provide literacy for themselves and
their children.
The competition for literacy shapes the terms for literacy.

Literacy competition has made access for particular sponsors.

Literacy sponsors have made complex changes to the pursuit of
literacy.
Despite changes in education systems, the ability to organize and
access literacy has not changed.
Sponsors contribute to the literary crisis
Sponsorship and Access
Literary sponsorship is not equal for all types of people.
Sponsorship is easy to the majority race as well as the rich compared
to the poor and the minorities.
Literacy isnt defined by race or economic standings but rather by what
is learned and what is valuable
Literacy acts in different access routes.
Economic and political changes can also change the access to literacy.
Sponsorship and the Rise in Literacy Standards
Literacy and Literacy learning are shaped by the competition of literacy
sponsors.
Literacy has escalated from basic to more analytical and interpretive
skills.
People have depended on their literacy skills to earn livings as well as
exercising their civil rights.
As society changes the forms of literacy also change.
