Must Sacrifice Something for the Sake of Others
There is a story why animal right activists prevent the scientists to run experiment
on animal. It starts from here, there is several cosmetic companies use animals to test on
their new shampoo products whether if those products safe for people to use before
distributing out the market. However, during the testing process, the chemicals in the new
shampoo products have affected negatively on testing group of animals cause these
species go blind and die slowly. Nowadays, many medical and cosmetic companies use
animal as testing subject for their new products. Therefore, animal test in cosmetic
becomes a controversial topic that has resurfaced to get intention of many people
especially group of animal right activists. They are strongly opposing any testing or
research related to animals under any condition to protect it from getting any injury.
Although animal rights activists disagree that animal should not be the testing subject
under any condition or cause, but I argue that animals should be use as subjects for
testing new medicine products, because some animal species have similar traits as
humans, many human diseases have been cured through the test of new medicine on
animals, and people afraid to be testing subject.
Humans share common ancestor with animals in term of homology. According to
Herzog, Chimpanzees share 98% of their genes with human(Herzog 209). The author

believe that if we use animal as testing subject for new medicine products, the result on
animals(have similar trait with human) will be pretty much precise on how those product
will work on human. Moreover on of the articles states that, the sequencing of the
human and mouse genomes has revealed remarkable similarities. About 99% of the genes
in these two genomes have direct counterparts in the two species.(Kehinde). Hence,
using mouse(rat, mice) to test out the quality of medical products consider as a relevant
option before letting these products out of market for people to buy then use it. Therefore,
we should support the scientists to use animals for testing out new medical products
instead of opposing them, and we must people suffering with the illness and waiting to
be treated.
Moreover, many scientists have found out methods to kill the viruses cause
infection for human body by producing medicine and vaccine for that particular illness by
studying and testing on animals. Herzog states that, Liz Hodge of the Foundation of
Biomedical Research says that without animal research we would not have immunization
for polio, nor would there be antibiotics,depression, bipolar disorder, or
hypertension.(Herzog 216). There are so many achievements on discover the diseases in
human and method to cure those disorders based on study and use animals as tool and
testing subjects. In addition, Herzog mentions that many scientists who study on animals
find that animal research is the key to the advancement of medicine(Herzog 217)
because of the advantage similarity between animal and human so researchers to figure
out the vaccine to prevent or cure sickness by testing those animals with new advantage
medicine. In reality, we can sacrifice mice for a vaccine to cure Dengue fever, which

disease cause child mortality. Besides that without animals, there will be no way for
scientist to create different type of immunization that cure certain disease; more than that,
many people will not be healthy standing where they are now. Hence, we must support
the researchers who satisfy and overcome their fears of killing animal for our human
being sake to find out the disease that humans have through animal (has similar genes
with human) cell. The articles Alternatives to Animal Testing: Current Status and Future
Perspectives points that, when it comes to the production and quality for medical
products, many scientists or researchers in Europe use almost mammals(mice and rats)
for their research and development.(Manfred et al). Hence, we must support and entrust
these scientists who study under the lights throughout days to testing new method or
medical products to curse illness that people have facing.
On the other hand, not many people volunteer to sacrifice themselves for study on
any new medical product. According to Herzogs book Some We Love, Some We Hate,
Some We Eat which mentions that, the subject of that experiment, if it is not an animal,
will be a human being(Herzog 217). The author wants to ask people who against animal
testing to think if they will volunteer to be a testing subject instead of animals to find out
medicine to treat diseases, which cause humans ill. Moreover, if anything dangerous
happens during the testing process, families of people who volunteers as testing subjects
should not take legal action. That is the reason why scientists use animals for their study
about any disease instead of human because people might go to jail for intentionally or
accidently kill or hurt other. In addition, it is difficult to start a research or testing project
to finding out a way to cure the diseases by using non-animal testing.

Therefore, activist animals rights should not oppose the scientists or any
organization use animals to produce new medicines or study about humans disease.
Addition, they should go after companies that are using animals as testing subjects, and
stop them from bringing any harm for animals for their businesses. Since, the purpose of
using animals of scientists different from some cosmetic company, the scientist intents to
save people to get away from diseases and cure illnesses by producing medicines;
however, some cosmetic company, they use animals to test out their products and care
about their profits more than anything. Hence, activist animals rights must know which
right and wrong before making decision whether disagree or agree on something.
In conclusion, using animals for studying and researching about new medicine
products are necessary to keep human beings alive. The medicines might not save
everyone on the planet, but at least, it supports many people to live through diseases, and
the animal right activists decide to speak up to defend for animals because they find
connection between them with the certain animal species, and they are not wrong.
However, sometime we need to sacrifice or let it go something to hold on what more
valuable. Therefore, we need to make a choice whether or not to have animals contribute
in research or testing projects that relate to medical and diseases. Since animals are
important and necessary objects for the testing project in order to produce new medicine
or develop vaccine to cure and against the diseases bring harm for human beings.
