8. Which part of the novel that you like best?

Give reasons for your choice with close

references to the text (SPM 2011).
The novel I have learnt, Catch Us If You Can by Catherine McPhail revolves around a
teenager, Rory and his grandfather whom he calls Granda. Rory and Granda are on an escape
adventure from the authorities because they do not want to be separated from each other. They
have cared for and looked after each other for a long time and with Granda getting on in years
and becoming forgetful, Rory takes over the responsibility of looking after Granda on his own.
The best part in the novel that I like the most is The Great Escape. The Great Escape
began when Rory was sent to the Castle Street, a childrens home because his Granda was sick
and admitted to the hospital. Without he realised, Val Jessup sent Granda to the Rachnadar, an
old folks home because he thought that Rory was too young to take care of his Granda. So, Rory
made his big decision to run away from Castle Street and took Granda away from Rachnadar.
One of the reasons, I like this part is Rory could reunite with his Granda again. They can
stay together and live happily like before. Granda became a happier person compared to when he
was in Rachnadar. Rory would not have to worry about the condition of his Granda anymore.
Hence, I love Rorys plan, The Great Escape, as it could reunite Rory and his beloved Granda.
Besides, Rory and Granda faced lots of adventures throughout The Great Escape. This
would make the readers like me be more interested in reading the novel. As the example, Rory
and Granda had to hide from authorities by staying in Darrens moms caravan. Furthermore,
Granda became a brave person. He hot-wired an old car to run away from the man who had
threatened Rory.
Their journey was a struggle to stay free. Strangers helped them all the way, giving them
shelter and making safe plans for them. Rory had doubts about whether he was doing the right
thing. All the doubts were dispelled as Granda looked happy even when he was exhausted.
To put in a nutshell, I like The Great Escape because it teaches me to be more careful in
making decisions. Each decision comes with its effect. Indeed, The Great Escape makes me
become more curious to know the ending the novel.
