Annotated Bibliography
Ash, Lydia. "The Modern Apprentice - Raptor Diseases." The Modern Apprentice - Raptor
Diseases. N.p., 2004. Web. 17 Mar. 2016.
The article The Modern Apprentice evaluates the effects that rehabilitation and
captivity have on birds. Many tests and samples are taken to find what the cause of injury is and
what is wrong with the bird. With all the tests it can cause the bird stress. This article shows a
case of a severely injured bird that had multiple injuries and was infected with worms. The raptor
had to go through a series of treatments. From all the stress put on the bird it did not eat and had
to be force fed. The article also states that force feeding itself can cause more stress on the bird.
The bird in this particular case did not fully recover and could not be set free. I chose this article
because it shows a negative effect of rehabilitation.
Warren, Jim. "Raptor Care." Carolina Raptor Center -Huntersville, NC. N.p., 2003. Web. 17
Mar. 2016.
In the article Raptor Care it explains the steps that the bird goes through until it
is released back into the wild. It tells how the bird receives a physical exam and depending on

the size, age and bred of the raptor, what is done to help it. The Article talks about each step to
recovery from the initial exam to release. It shows how the birds are given smaller cages in the
beginning and transfer to a much bigger cage for short flights. This article gives reasons as to
why or how the bird was injured. Many had infections that hurt their ability to hunt, causing
them to be malnutritious. Normally they are force fed until able to eat of hunt by themselves.
This article also states that the human contact with birds affects their wild behavior. Too much
human contact can cause them to not be afraid and venture into more populated towns where
they can get hurt. I chose this article because it gave the steps to recovery and shows that too
much human contact is not a good effect of rehabilitation.
"World Bird Sanctuary | Home." World Bird Sanctuary | Home. N.p., 2014. Web. 17 Mar. 2016.
In the article for the World Bird Sanctuary, it tells the reader about how the
sanctuary works and what it tries to achieve during the rehabilitation process. It states that all
birds must be given a full examination and must meet all the criteria before release. The article
also explains what to do if you encounter an injured bird. This article gives step by step
instructions on how to handle and treat the bird until the capturer can get it to the center. The
World Bird Sanctuary takes all birds of prey. They give adequate treatment to each individual
bird. The article shows how the treatments affect the bird and helps with quickening the release
time for the birds. I chose this article because it shows a positive effect of rehabilitating which in
this case is a faster release time.
