Good afternoon class! As you all know, yesterday we began our unit over World War II. We
started this unit by talking about appeasement. Can anyone give us a brief summary of
what happened with Germany at the beginning of WWII? Great! Today we are going to take
what we learned yesterday and apply it to a map. What you are going to do is work with a
group to label a map of Europe during WWII where you will identify Germany and the 14
countries it conquered during the war. You will also include the date that these countries
were taken over so you can see the timeline of German aggression. When you finish this,
you and your group members will need to answer one question where you cite evidence as
to why Hitler invaded other European countries and predict the effects of the German
invasions. Before we get started, I want you all to picture Oxford in your head. Now think
about all the important things that have happened to you during your time in Oxford. Now, I
want you to imagine these things on a map. If I gave you a blank map of Oxford, could you
locate where these important events occurred? Great! Thats basically what we will be

doing today, but with German aggression in Europe. I want you all to really focus on this
lesson so you see how the Axis Powers were growing in Europe. This material is important
because the relationships that formed during this time still come into affect in our society
today. Alright lets get started!

Learning Tasks (Procedures):

A. The teacher will pass out the Exit Slip Papers.
B. The teacher will explain that Hitlers conquering of other European countries is one of
the primary causes of WWII becoming a global war.
C. The teacher will pull up Map Skills Performance Assessment Task on Schoology.
D. The teacher will display Map Skills Performance Assessment Task on Apple TV.
E. The teacher will read the task instructions and rubric aloud to the class while the
students follow along on the Apple TV.
a. Given the grade level Social Studies textbook, a map of Europe, an
explanation sheet of the task, and a list of countries and dates they were
conquered, students will work in pairs to label and color-code a map of
Germany and the 14 other countries conquered by Hitler/Germany during
WWII. Label this assignment #1. The instructions for color coding and
labeling are included in the attached performance assessment map task. In
addition to labeling the countries, you will include the date in which the
country was taken over by Germany. It is important that these maps are
accurate, as the students are going to use the maps throughout the unit.
When the pairs are finished, the students will collaborate as a group of 4 to
discuss their findings and their feelings and thoughts regarding the following
question: Why did Hitler do this and how do you think it affected the people in
Europe, around the world, in America, and in our home state? The students
should take notes regarding their discussion. When everyone is finished with
the task, the groups of 4 will take turns coming up to the front of the class to
discuss their ideas.
F. The teacher will instruct the students to pull up the document on their own Schoology
accounts.
G. The teacher will pass out a Map of Europe to each student.
H. The students will start the task.
I. The students will present their findings to the class. (INFORMAL CHECK)
J. The students will turn in their assignment at the end of class.
K. The teacher will take up the Exit Slip Papers.
Closure:
Okay class the period is about to be over. I think you all did a great job labeling your map of
Europe during WWII. You were able to identify Germany and the 14 countries it conquered
during the war. You also included the date that these countries were taken over so you
could see the timeline of German aggression. You then worked collectively to cite evidence
as to why Hitler invaded other European countries and predict the effects of the German
invasions. I know we already presented our findings, but after we have heard everyones
opinions, how do you think the United States will respond? Great! As your exit slip, I want
you to write down the act that the United States once passed to keep our country out of war
(INFORMAL CHECK). Tomorrow we will look at more Axis advances and start learning about
the Holocaust. Have a great rest of your day!
Differentiated Instruction:
Enrichment: For these students, I will give them a question in which they have to
predict what the other Axis powers will do with the continuing German invasion.

Intervention: These students will be paired with the enrichment students to ensure
cooperation and understanding of the task.
Accommodation: These students can receive extra time to finish their maps. The
ESL students will not have to present their findings to the class.
