Universitys Dance Marathon Breaks Record

In March of 2016, the University of Marylands dance marathon took place from
12pm to 12am in the Armory. Terp Thon, an on campus organization, arranged the
12-hour Dance Marathon. Composed of over 200 members spanning various majors,
specialty programs, and interests, the student-run fundraising group raises money
for Childrens National Health System in Washington, D.C.
The organization is part of a larger dance marathon group called Childrens Miracle
Network. At this point in time, the network consists of over 250 schools that hold
dance marathons to support their local Miracle Network hospitals. The funds raised
from Terp Thon pay for medical expenses not covered by insurance, occupational
equipment, and scholarship grants vital to the survival of children treated at
Childrens National.
This year marked the seventh anniversary of Terp Thon. With a goal of raising
$800,000 for the kids, the event set high expectations for all involved. To
accommodate the rapid growth of on campus participation, the event took place at
the Armory. Over 2,000 students, loved ones, and members came out to support
the cause. Participants ranged from all ages, Greek organizations, extracurricular on
campus groups, and sports teams. They were split into 5 color teams, which fiercely
battled in a series of events both before and during the event. The event began at
12 pm, at which time miracle families were welcomed with music and cheers.
Throughout the day, miracle children shared their stories. Four-year-old Samerya
was diagnosed with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, a form of kidney disease
that prevents her from breaking down proteins. You would never know she was
facing this life threatening challenge as she rocked out to Beyonc on stage in front
of 2,000 people.
Terp Thon Morale committee member Amy Gill said, These children have been
through so much and are still happier than most people. Their bravery and strength
inspires us every day. On this one day, we show our commitment to them by
standing for 12 hours.
Each child inspired dancers to keep standing and keep fundraising. At 10pm, color
teams gathered to do one final push for donations. Dancers texted, called, tweeted,
and posted about the event and raised over $4,000 in one hour.
As the day came to a close, the event ended with a Power Hour of intense dance
music and flashing lights. Miracle children surfed the crowd and danced on stage
with the Morale committee, while participants danced and sang on the floor.
Participants continued to stand until the final donation reveal. At 11:55 pm, the
executive board took the stage and presented the total of $728,453.16. Although
the organization did not reach their goal, the large number was enough to bring
members, families, and miracle children to tears. This total broke the 7 th year Dance
Marathon fundraising record by more than $200,000 and placed Terp Thon in the
Top 10 Dance Marathons nationwide.

The organization is already planning for next years dance marathon. To become a
