The list below is offered as an informative guide. It is important to practice each stroke separately So you may then put them together successfully 1, NATURAL STROKE or LEGATO STROKE: A stroke that starts at any height, plays, then returns to its original height. It "ilows" in constant motion, rather than “stopping and starting’. Also called "REBOUND" STROKE or "FULL" STROKE, 2. TAP: A stroke that starts low (close to the drum head), plays, and returns to its low starting place. It is a soft Natural/ Legato stroke, 3. DOWN STROKE: A stroke that starts high, plays, and is stopped close to the drum. Also called a "CONTROLLED" STROKE or a "MARCATO" STROKE. UP STROKE: A stroke that starts low, plays, and lifts the bead above the player's hands. MULTIPLE BOUNCE: Strokes that are used to play a smooth "closed" roll. Also called “BUZZ,” or "Z" STROKES. The roll that is produced by using this stroke is called “multiple-bounce’, "buzz", "Z", ‘orchestral’, ‘concert’ or “closed.” 6. DOUBLE STROKES: Two even strokes played with one hand, either stroked or bounced. ‘They are used in double-stroke (“open”) rolls and drags. They are sometimes called "ROLL STROKES" but by definition in this guide are technically not “diddies", 7. DIDDLE: Two even strokes played on one hand in the same rhythmic notation as the single strokes in the same figure. Example: A paradiddle contains two single-stroke sixteenth notes and two double-stroke sixteenth notes (para-DIDDLE). DYNAMICS (SIX VOLUME LEVELS) pp pianissimo very soft Pp soft mp mf ——mezzo-forte fairly loud (medium-loud) f forte loud fort very loud Dynamics can be played in a number of ways, but they must always be relative to the ensemble, the phrase of music and the environment (outdoors, indoors, large group, small group, staging and volume capacity of the instrument playing melody). Different approaches for creating dynamic contrast can include: L turn (from parallel to the drum up to 2 maximum turn). 2, Inches (heights), for example, 3", 6", 9", 12" and 15” strokes. 3. Sound relative tothe ensemble. 4 "Feel." Some instructors teach “Ievelssinches" for marching activities and "sound! feel" for concertiindoor activities. Add two types of accents (‘regular" and “strong") for added color and expression. Table of Contents Pages Reading 2-4 ll. Unison and Ensemble Exercises 5-8 Ill. The Rudiments 9-12 IV.
