Students throughout their education life are taught to analyze genres by doing research
and finding different contrasting conclusions to be able to review what the topic or subject of the
reading is about. This information also helps students break down the content of what is being
read. Genre number 1 is an edited monograph titled Whom Have We Welcomed? By S.M.
Tomasi and C.B Keely. Even though the vocabulary being used is more complicated than the
web site, the monograph is more helpful to my understanding in the classroom because it is a
scholarly journal and has more relevant and useful information related to the topic. In addition,
the monograph has more sources that help me better understand the content.
The genres chosen were an edited monograph titled Whom Have We Welcomed? by
S.M. Tomasi and C.B. Keely. And the other one is a university web site created by research
students at UTEP titled Why Do Immigrant Neighborhoods Have Low Crime Rates? By Lisa
Y. Garibay. The claim this website is trying to make is that in the investigation made it was
given that people who migrated to the U.S. tended to be less violent and live in neighborhoods
with less crime rates rather than neighborhoods where only non-immigrants lived. Immigration is
a relevant topic that relates to UTEP because a good percentage of the students who attend the
university come from a family who has immigrated to the country in search for a better life and
better opportunities, like education. Of the two genres chosen, the monograph once again shows
it better meets the needs of the classroom because it has an argument, it is scholarly, and has
sources that are able to back up the argument in a truthful way. From both of the genres chosen,
the university website Why Do Immigrant Neighborhoods Have Low Crime Rates? better ties
with the audience by actually including them in interviews and surveys. With this information,
the audience can better interpret the situation and be able to connect with the issue since the

people surveyed are actually citizens, rather than just reading off a book that just provides an
argument.
The main claim of this genre, which is the monograph, is to develop a methodology to
estimate the effects of legislative changes on the demographic characteristics of future
immigrants, in other words it was created to find out about new laws that would be implemented
in order to affect future immigrants in a positive way. The audience who this monograph was
intended to be read by is mainly people from a higher level of education like college students
since the vocabulary it is scholarly and may be somewhat complicated and hard to read to some.
It is also directed to anyone who is interested in the immigration topic or wants to do research on
the subject. The purpose of the second genre, which is the university web site is mainly to show
the research done by the students and how the research shows that in the immigrant
neighborhoods being tested the crime rates were much lower than in other non- immigrant
neighborhoods. This genre is the one that incorporates the most of ethos, pathos, and logos. The
university research appeals to logos since it helps us, the readers get a much higher sense of
sentiment rather than the monograph Whom Have We Welcomed? because on the research
done there are citizens involved who talk about real life experiences. The audience intended for
the website is not specific to anyone in particular, but to anyone who can get a hold of it. Both of
these genres are only similar in the sense of that both of them are being written and published for
one purpose, to inform the reader. Like previously said, the differences in between the two
genres are the sources, meaning one is scholarly and the other one is not since UTEP does not
have any scholarly information published.
The best thing about the edited monograph is that it helps the author give more credibility
to the readers by providing background evidence and information by including other

contributions and excerpts by other books and journals written by other authors. On the other
hand, the web site does provide some source of credibility to its viewers since it has two videos
that back up the information which were part of the interviews done in the entire research. The
first genre, which is the monograph doesnt really evoke or create much emotion to the readers
since what the author is mainly using is logos and ethos by providing information that has
references to other authors. On the other hand the web site also proved logos, it is mainly based
off of pathos since it uses interviews and peoples opinions to create the whole study.
In conclusion, the genre that was most effective in conveying the message and relevant to
the topic is the edited monograph titled Whom Have We Welcomed? by S.M. Tomasi and
C.B. Keely because it is scholarly, has an argument and several sources that are able to back up
the argument. To conclude, as previously read, both of the genres are useful for the research on
immigration because both contribute to immigration in one way or another. These genres help
the reader understand why some issues and some laws are the way they are set and even remarks
how they may change in the future to either help or harm future immigrants. The university web
site created by UTEP research students Why Do Immigrant Neighborhoods Have Lower Crime
Rates by Lisa Y. Garibay is very easy to understand and more legible to the community and to
any reader. This is understandable because it was done by students with the help of people who
were being interviewed, which where citizens in a neighborhood with a high percentage of
immigrants. The research done for the website has a display located in the the Prospect Hall at
the University of Texas at El Paso open for the public.
