    The purpose of this laboratory experiment is to learn about the conditions that would cause oil eating bacteria local to Lake Michigan to multiply. The greater the abundance of the oil eating bacteria the more oil the bacteria will be able to ingest. Ammonium Hydroxide was seen as the most effective agent for aiding the microbes oil consumption.

    Purpose:Thepurposeofthislaboratoryexperimentistolearnabouttheconditionsthatwouldcauseoil
    eatingbacterialocaltoLakeMichigantomultiply.Thegreatertheabundanceoftheoileatingbacteriathe
    moreoilthebacteriawillbeabletoingest.Sincethesemicrobesareverysensitivetotheenvironmentthey
    livein,testswouldbeusedtoseeifconditionslikewarmtemperaturesandincreasednitrogencancause
    theseoileatingbacteriatomultiply.Testswillbeperformedonoillacedsoilsamplesderivedfromthe
    MidwestnearLakeMichigan.
    Procedure:ThisprocedureinvolvedcalculatingtheabsorbancelevelswithaSpectrophotometerof
    contaminatedsoilsamplesascomparedtothesamplesafteroildegradingmicrobeswereintroducedwith
    outsidevariables.Thesevariableswereappliedeitherbybeingmixedintothesamplesorsimplysprinkledon
    top.ThevariablesintroducedincludeStrontiumNitrate,UreaandAmmoniumHydroxide.Theoilcontents
    inpercentagebasedoffoftheabsorbanceforeachsampleafter7dayswasthencomparedtotheoriginaloil
    contentspercentage.

    Conclusion:
    Overall,thedatadidsupportthehypothesis.AmmoniumHydroxidewasseenasthemosteffective
    agentforaidingthemicrobesoilconsumption.Thissolutionwasthemosteffectivewhenitwasappliedbybeing
    mixedintothegravelorsimplyplacedonthetop.TheamountofAmmoniumHydroxideusedwasalsocorrelated
    totheamountorUreaandStrontiumnitratebypriceondosage.Eachdoseaddedtothesamplesfromeachsolution
    costed.0078cents.ThismeansthatalthoughAmmoniumHydroxideisthemostexpensiveproductbeingabout
    717$perton,itisstillthemoreeffectivesolutionforthemicrobesefficiencyevenifitisusedinlesseramounts.
