Part Four: Other Requirements

1. What other requirements must you meet to graduate from this college/university with your chosen
degree? (Testing, Projects, Observation hours, GPA, etc.)
Upon completion of the Program students will:

Meet current State of Illinois standards for Elementary Education licensure

Gain knowledge of philosophical and educational principles underlying the teaching of
elementary students.
Gain knowledge and practice methods of teaching elementary students.
Qualify for Elementary Education Endorsement
Complete 100 clock hours in a local school and a student teaching experience.

Current GPA: 3.087

2. What options do you have for student teaching at your chosen college/university? Do they allow you to
student teach internationally, in urban or rural areas, or in non-public school? How long will you have to
student teach? What other requirements must be met during the semester you student teach?

The Clinical Experiences and Student Teaching (CEST) Office exists to support the professional
development of Northeastern Illinois University teacher candidates so that they are well prepared
to educate a diverse student population and be effective teachers. The CEST Office works in
partnership with Department Chairpersons, program coordinators and faculty, and district and
school administrators to manage field placements for candidates in all teacher licensure areas and
programs.
12 Weeks
Throughout the semester, the student teacher must work on the development of technical
competencies and reflective teaching. Designing and implementing lessons and units using a
variety of instructional strategies/activities; experiencing one-on-one, small group and large group
settings; and using a variety of instructional media and resources is a part of the teaching process
and should include differentiated instruction. Student teachers also should participate in all
activities and responsibilities required of the cooperating teacher, such as record keeping, grading,
conferences, in-services, faculty meetings, etc

Part Five: Licensure

Please answer the questions below.

1. Which content test will you need to take for your desired major?
Content Area test: Elementary Grades 1-6

2. In your own words describe the edTPA process. What will you be required to do to complete this portion
of your license requirement? How are you assessed and what can you do if you are unsuccessful the first
time?

Teacher candidates are required to submit a student teaching portfolio that include lesson plans,
video clips, commentaries and student work samples. The portfolio should explain your work
behind each of these tasks:
o Planning for Instruction and Assessment
o Instructing and Engaging Students in Learning
o Assessing Student Learning
Candidates have one year after student teaching to submit proof to their advisor that they passed
edTPA, and may request one additional semester if deemed eligible by the edTPA Coach.
Candidates who fail to submit proof of passing within the stated timeline will not be eligible for
licensure as part of their initial program. Regardless of whether candidates complete independently
or enroll in a NEIU edTPA course, they are required to delay graduation until they have
successfully passed edTPA or will receive a transcript comment indicating that they did not meet
Illinois licensure requirements at the time of graduation. The College of Education will inform the
University Registrar Office when a candidate has passed or failed edTPA.

2. How do you apply for licensure? (Be specific)

Completing your licensure program is the first step in the process. In order to obtain your
Professional Educator License (PEL), you must APPLY FOR AND REGISTER your license
with the State of Illinois AFTER you have been ENTITLED by Northeastern Illinois
University (NEIU). DO NOT APPLY until you receive an e-mail from ELIS stating that you
have been entitled.
o Go to the ELIS & log in (If you do not have one, set up an ELIS account)
o Select the "Applications" menu item.
o Select the "Entitlement Licensure Application" menu item
o Click on the "Apply Online" link.
o Follow the 11-step wizard through the application process. Your license is official
upon the completion of the online wizard & fee payment.
o Print the final page for your records.
o Register you license in the region you will be teaching in or (if not employed) living
in via ELIS or your local ROE.
o Mail OFFICIAL transcripts from all institutions you have attended to the ISBE (if
you have not pre-ordered official transcripts to be sent upon degree completion)
o Go to your ELIS account to verify that your license has been issued and all
endorsements and/or approvals are accurate.
