I.

INTRODUCTION
Asnewinnovationsdevelop,sodopeople'swayoflife.Justlikehowmobiledevices

havebecomesmallerovertheyears,homeshavevariedinsizesaswell.Itisnotuncommonto
seeabusinessownerliveinasmallapartmentovertheirestablishmentoranadventurous
individualliveinamicrohomeattachedtothebackoftheirvehicle.Smallerlivingarrangements
haveincreasedinpopularity,emphasizingqualityoverquantity.Withthisincreasingtrend,the
SeniorCapstoneforInteriorDesignhasproposedtostudentsthechallengeofdesigninga
functionalspacewithinlimitedsquarefootage,inacabinstructurethatepitomizessimplicity
overflamboyancy.
II.

PROJECTSCOPE
InteriorDesignseniorsweretaskedwithdesigningthesecondfloorspaceofthePoconos

ChildrensActivityCamp,locatedinthePoconosMountainsofPennsylvania.Thesecondfloor
ofthecabinissplitintotwomainareas:acommercialspaceforprivateconsultations,
presentations,andadministrativefunctions,andaresidentialspaceforthedirectoroftheactivity
camp(KrisChapman)torelaxafterspendingthedaywithhighenergychildren.Thebuildingfor
theactivitycenterisacabinsurroundedbypicturesquelandscapes,andshowcasingthis
influencethroughoutthecampsinteriordesignisanimportantcomponentoftheproject.The

designersoverallgoalistocreateanaestheticallypleasingandfunctionaldesignconceptthat
willmeettherequestsoftheclientandcomplywiththedesignlimitationsthatwereplaced.
Someoftheaforementionedneedsandlimitationsincludeensuringaccesstothemultipleareas
ofthesecondfloorfromthelobby,achievingbalancebetweenresidentialandcommercialareas,
respectingtheprivacyofthedirector,meetingspecificationsforthedifferentspaces(asdetailed
withinthedesignscenario),andmeetingguidelinessetbytheAmericanswithDisabilitiesAct
(ADA)andtheNationalKitchenandBathAssociation(NKBA).Thedeliverablesoftheproject
includeacolorpalettereflectingthePennsylvaniaPoconosafloorplanandfurniture
arrangementdrawntoonefourthinchscaleanelevationinonehalfinchscalefurnishings,
accessories,andlightingforthelobbyandlivingroomandaninvoicethatbillsfivedifferent
furnishingsorderedforthelobbyandlivingroom.Alloftheproducts,materials,andfurnishing
samplesorderedforthelobbyandlivingroomareplacedontodesignboards,asrequestedbythe
Campsboard.Sincetheoverallchallengeoftheprojectistodesignwithinasmallerspaceand
connecttonatureusingcalmingelementsandenvironmentallyfriendlymaterials,researchhadto
becompletedinordertoproperlydesignaccordingtotheclientsrequests.
III.

CONDUCTEDRESEARCH

A. PrinciplesandElementsofDesign.
Theprinciplesandelementsofdesignwere
implementedthroughoutthedesignersconceptstohelpestablishawelcomingatmosphere
forthecommercialspaceandarelaxingatmospherefortheresidentialspace.Warmcolors
complimentthenatureofthePoconosMountainarea,aswellasreflectwarmth,energy,
andcomfort(Pile137).Thiscolorchoicewasreflectedintheoveralldesignconceptforthe
lobbyandlivingroomareas.Formswithstraightedgesreflectprofessionalismand

organization,whilecurvedformsaremoregraciousandrelaxed(Nielson,Taylor68).To
implementthiselement,furnitureselectedforthelobbyweregeometricandfurniture
selectedforthelivingroomhadmoreorganicshape.Thefabricschosenforthelivingroom
variedfromsmoothtorough,contrastingwiththefabricchoiceforthelobby,whichwas
moresmoothandsoft.Thisdifferenceintexturesreflectsthedifferenceinpurposeforthe
twospacessmoothtexturesaremoreassociatedwithmoreformalinteriors,whilerough
texturesaremorecasual(Nielson,Taylor71).Forthefurniturearrangementwithinthetwo
spaces,aUshapedarrangementisthemostappropriate,asitencouragesconversationand
interactionamongthepeopleinthespace(Kicklighter7475),whichisneededinthe
lobby,wherestaffandvisitorsmayrelax,andinthelivingroom,wherethedirectorwillbe
entertainingguestsifheorshechoosestodoso.
B. Specifications.
ThedesignerisinstructedtocomplywithguidelinessetbytheAmericans
withDisabilitiesAct(ADA)andtheNationalKitchenandBathAssociation(NKBA).The
toiletroomwithinthecommercialspaceisdesignedtobeaccessiblebyanyvisitorsorstaff
thatmaybeusingawheelchairtheroomitselfisbigenoughtohaveafivefootturning
radiusandhasgrabbarsplacedonboththesideandabovethetoiletfortheconvenienceof
theuser(Dept.ofJustice).Thesinkofthekitchenintheresidentialspaceisplaced
adjacenttothecookingsurfaceandthecountersofthekitchenaretwentyfourinchesdeep,
thestandarddepthforcounters(NKBAGuidelines).
IV.

SUMMARIZEDACTIVITIES
Thedesignerstartedtheprojectbylookingatthedesignscenarioandannotatingallof

thewants,needs,andrestrictionssetbytheclient.Achecklistofalloftheneededareasonthe

secondfloorbasedonthedesignscenarioaidedthecreationofthefloorplan,thefirsttaskfor
thedesigner.Initiallydraftedongridpaperandlaterrenderedonvellumpaperusingpermanent
andPrismacolormarkers,thefloorplansplitsuptheresidentialandcommercialspaceswithclear
boundaries,toensuretheprivacyofthedirectorandcreateasmoothtrafficflowthroughoutthe
entirefloor.A2Delectronicrenderingofthelobbywascreatedconcurrently,displayingthe
furnitureplacementanddepthofthefurnishingswithinthespace.Furnitureandsampleswere
researchedonlinethefurnishingsandflooringfoundwerelaterlistedonthedesignersinvoice
fortheclient.Aftersamplesofmaterialsweregatheredandpicturesoffurnitureandaccessories
wereprinted,layoutsofthreedesignboardswerecreated,aidingtheassemblyofthedesign
boardsusedforpresentationatCapstoneNight.
V.

REFLECTION
Overall,thisprojectwasapositiveexperienceforme.IfirstpresenteditattheNevada

FCCLAStateConferenceinMarch,wheremyprojectpartnerandIreceivedpositivefeedback
andagoldmedalforourefforts.Theprojectstimulatedwhatitwouldbeliketodesignforareal
client,whichissomethingthatIplantodointhefutureinthearchitecturalanddesignindustry.
