Equipment
Example product observation
Engineering notebook
Pencil
Automoblox vehicle or other consumer product
Procedure
In this activity you will analyze the function of your consumer product.
Before measurement and dissection, you must theorize how the product functions
through non-destructive observation. Identify your products name and the company
that produced it, and answer the following questions.
Product Name:
Company Name:
Mini Stapler
Vistaprint
4. Identify the system inputs, intended product function, and outputs in the table
below.
Inputs
Staples
Hand motion
Metal
Product Function
Pushed into paper
Push staples in
Hold/ bend staples
Plastic
Output
Go into paper
Pushes staples in
Helps attach the staples
in
Adds design, better hold.
6. What is it about this devices function that you cannot identify because the
mechanical components are hidden from plain view?
How the staples bend, how the metal part holding the staples moves up and
down, how the staples are injected out of the top half.
Conclusion
1 Why do engineers perform reverse engineering on products?
So they can figure out how the product was put together, what makes it useful and
great, and how they can improve it.
