The author addresses the reader to try and kindle a bond between the

reader and the story itself. The author uses this as a sort of trap to snare the
reader into loving the story. When the reader of this story, in this time period,
reads a book that addresses everyday problems that one would face; they
would be infatuated with the story. But when a story adds that extra little
touch of addressing the reader it would create an emotional bond with the
reader and the book itself. Little thinks such as, Can you see how foggy the
day is? (2) Or I want you to hide your disgust, take no heed to your clean
clothes, and come right down with me ---here, into the thickest of the fog and
mud and effluvia (2) would change the mindset of the reader. The reader
would go from thinking of this as just another author attempting to make
some money; to a writer that actually cares about me and my struggle.
The effect of the first person narration on conveying the story
realistically would have the same effect also. It is yet another trick up the
authors sleeve to capture the readers love. The author uses this method to
influence the belief that the author is one of the working class people like
themselves, and not an aristocrat that is using books as another scheme of
making money. It creates the belief that the author can sympathize with
them because at the end of the day the author is just another working class
citizen like them.

In this prompt, the topic of discussion is the similarities between The Yellow
Wallpaper and The Palace Burner. The most significant similarities are
found between the narrators of these poems. Both seem to have
psychological issues that cause them to continue to deteriorate as the story
goes on. This leads to them developing a substantially more unhinged
personality and a more intense sense of paranoia. This is shown when the
narrator in The Yellow Wallpaper states, I dont like to look out of the
windows eventhere are so many of those creeping women, and they creep
so fast. I wonder if they all come out of that wall-paper as I did?. Also these
pieces have understated hints in subtext that the narrator feels trapped and
desperately seeks freedom. For example, in the The Yellow Wallpaper, the
narrator wants to be free from the control of the wallpaper that seems to
mock her and her overbearing husband. This is shown as she states John is
away all day, and even some nights when his cases are serious. If you read
this quote closely, it depicts how the wife maintains resentment towards John
as he orders her to remain at home, confined to her bedroom, when he is
free to do whatever he pleases. In theThe Palace Burner, the narrator
wants to be free from the influence of the palace and the French and

Christian men that controlled her, You would have loved to burn a palace
too? But they had guns in France, and Christian men Shot wicked little
Communists like you. The narrators both finally reach a breaking point and
find that the only way to save their sanity is to to destroy the thing that they
believe to have destroyed them.
Narrators in both of these stories give reference as to what social constructs
at the end of the 19th Century were like for women. The trend of how
women were inferior to men is blatantly apparent as shown in both of these
pieces of Realism as the womens lives in both stories were strongly
controlled by men. This took a great toll on their madness as they felt like
they couldnt express their thoughts without being overlooked, or their
problems without being dismissed. This leads to their belief indulging in their
crazy is the only way that they can save themselves and release their inner
demons. This is illustrated in The Palace Burner when the woman burns the
palace to the ground, Would I burn palaces? The child has seen In this fierce
creature of the Commune here, So bright with bitterness and so serene, and
in The Yellow Wallpaper when the woman tears down all in wallpaper in a
room that seemed to challenge her. Both narrators develop such a delusional
aspect to their insanity that they are led to finally accomplish what they each
believe to be the the only and final solution.

I believe that Mrs. Mallard is a sympathetic character for many reasons. Its not unusual for a
wife that just lost her husband to grieve and go into depression. Just as Mrs. Mallard went
through. Mrs. Mallard is a sympathetic character because during her entrance into depression
she began to try and think of the positives of her husbands deaths. She went from crying daily to
thinking of the freedom she now has as a widow. Mrs. Mallard exclaims, "free, free, free!" and
no powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence with which men saying that she is now
free from the shackles of marriage and can now experience the life of a free woman once again.
As a male my opinion in the matter would be to move on in life because one cannot change the
past. This perspective may be different from a female view because female have more of an
emotional attachment to their partners.

I do not believe Chopin should critique Louise as her perception of what the institution of
marriage is, is most representative of that of current day, till death do we part. This concept
demonstrates how the couple will not separate until one person in the mutual agreement dies, and
following that, the other partner has the right to move on and be happy once more.

The Naturalist writer, Frank Norris believed that realism wasnt as exciting
and action packed as a romantic or dark romantic poem, but he forgot a
major factor in the social acceptance of a story. From my point of view I
believe for this statement to be correct, but that is because the tragedies
realism doesnt resemble my life. The stories of realism are like a portrait as
where romanticism an abstract piece of art. It is easy to see why realism was
widely accepted when you look at the time period. Realism began to show up
after the civil war, and I guess after all of the carnage people got tired of
fantasy because even the citizens have been introduced to a humongous
tragedy.
Edith Wartons statement of life is always either a tightrope or a feather
bed. Give me the tight rope actually has some meaning. All of the realistic
novels that we have read so far have actual interesting plots to them. To
build a fire was interesting to me because of the immense accurate detail
that was incorporated into the plot. As taken directly from the story, The
man put more tobacco in his mouth and started a new growth of yellow ice
on his face. (70) One might question why I would use this quote, but it is
very simple. It resemble actions that would have happened in the same
circumstance where to occur in real life. A man from this time period would
have tobacco on him and in the temperature that his is in he would have ice
forming on his face if he were to sweat. Another example from the text,
What was a little frost? What was a little frost? A bit painful, that was all. It
was never serious (68). This is a perfect example to show the mindset of
someone that doesnt understand survival in the frozen wilderness. In
comparison a romantic story would have had the person magically know all
of information required to survival; with the addition of explaining the
symbolical importance of the color of the snow.

The narrator of A Memorandum of Sudden Death uses multiple journalistic

techniques to acquire his certain writing style. The narrator has more of a
monotone approach during the entirety of the plot. The reader can induce
the fact that the narrator isnt even apart of the plot. A great example of this
is the fact that there are excerpts from the actual memorandum located in
the text of the document. Which are actually written in a journalistic
technique as well. This tone and technique is exemplified by, The Ridiculous
jostles the elbow of the sublime and shoulders it from place as Idaho
announces that he has found two more cartridges in Estorijos pocket. (14)
Which shows the narrator not being a part of the actual story itself.

This style of writing is very beneficial to the reader when it comes to the
translation of information from the text to the audience. The style of
journalism allows the narrator to portray a large amount of detail when
telling a story. Also the reader can be assured that all of the sentences of the
story can be backed up by fact because that is the way of a journalist. The
immense amount of detail can be demonstrated by, The manuscript in itself
is interesting. It is written partly in pencil, partly in ink (no doubt from a
fountain pen), on sheets of manila paper torn from some sort of long and
narrow account-book. (3). No other short story or poem that we have read
would include such a large amount of information about such a miniscual
topic. Overall I believe that the journalistic style of writing would be a
pleasure to most readers of this document.
