Majoring in Math is Just For You!!

Suppose you love mathematics, but ultimately see yourself pursuing a career as a doctor,
lawyer, or in business. You should be aware that professional graduate schools in medicine, law,
and business think mathematics is a great major because it develops analytical skills and the
ability to work in a problem-solving environment. Most of us are comfortable using basic
everyday math like shopping. But higher level math, such as calculus may seem mysterious, a
completely unfamiliar language . As a math major, you will study this language and learn how to
use it to describe the world. You will explore calculus, modern algebra, and other high level math
in the purest light. It helps to be someone who welcomes puzzles and other intellectual
challenges and enjoys finding patterns in the world. For those who love to solve math problems
just to know the answer and enjoy using abstract concepts to discover whether something is true
or false, this could be the major for you.
In a general assumption, I would say that math is one of the least liked classes in school (both
high school and college). A lot of people dislike it because many don't understand the concepts
and don't like exercising their minds with problems. Math is a beautiful subject when you are
able to understand it and there is usually more than one way to solve a problem. It can lead to
creativity, but in the end all the different paths taken must lead to the same place (the answer to
the problem).. Math is important for an individuals mental activity. It challenges those who
excel in the arts to use the other part of their brain and stimulates thoughts that they may not
have had otherwise. It is not calculus that is required to challenge someone or improve them, but
even the basics, which may be difficult for some, can help students to achieve a personal
satisfaction in accomplishing something they are not necessarily good at. This is the same
satisfaction I feel when Ive finished a well written paper. It may take me ten times longer than
1

most people to write a simple one or two page paper, but when its done, I know Ive
accomplished something that took me great effort to complete. This type of personal satisfaction
in others can help them to achieve goals in all areas of their life. A person can learn from this
satisfaction and possibly reach a little higher for their next goal whether it is in math or not.
People who are lazy and sit on the couch all evening watching their favorite television show,
eating chips, and downing a couple cokes cant brag about anything that was stimulating to the
brain or the body. Except for a couple pounds in weight gain and possibly a few brain cells that
got a little dumber, nothing was accomplished. But if that same person were to get up off the
couch the next night and go for a walk or a jog, most likely they would come in proud of himself
or herself for the wonderful effort put into the night. For a student who hates math and is put in a
class where the teacher makes it easier for them, they wont get the same result as if it were a
challenge to their brain, similarly to the person who sits on the couch. Many teachers and
students make the mistake in thinking that because a person hates the subject it should be made
easier, but this will not get the student far. They will just be stuck on the couch wasting away part
of their brain that they could have made great use of. Without math in the lives of students, some
real life situations and problems become more difficult for them to solve. We are all
mathematicians ,we just need to exercise our brains more in order to get them. Majoring in math
will be difficult ,there will be lots of basic and difficult courses but with this major it will be easy
to search for jobs, have a great salary and have the satisfaction of being able to solve problems.
As a math major, you will have a wide variety of options in your course of study. You will
study the basics such as algebra, and trigonometry. These basic courses will prepare you for more
difficult courses such as Calculus, Computer Science, Statistics, Real analysis ,etc. Each course
prepares you for the next course so you will always be prepared and should have basic
2

knowledge of each course. In the everyday life of a mathematician you meet a lot of passionate
people. Very few people major in mathematics with ulterior motives such as increasing a chance
of getting a high paying job. (I am not saying math majors don't find high paying jobs.) People
major in math because they love to think about mathematics. Not all majors are like this. And it
is inspiring to be surrounded by people who are passionate about the subject. There is little
variety in assignments. Basically you will do problem sets, take a midterm and a final. There is
no lab or project or writing cool web applications. It can get pretty dull. For this major it takes a
lot of patience and hard work. You won't be good at math by just studying once in a week. You
need to be able to study the concepts and be able to understand how each equation works. There
will be errors but if you practice them over and over again you will get better. It is recommended
that you do internships, or volunteer, as a tutor so one can be able to have the experience to work
with different problems from algebra to calculus.
One of the big misconceptions about mathematics is that the only thing you can do with a math
degree is become a high school math teacher or an actuary. This could not be further from the
truth since I switch my major from secondary teaching to applied mathematics sciences!
Mathematics provides a great preparation for a variety of jobs, and in the current job market
many employers are desperate for applicants that have mathematics backgrounds and problem
solving skills. Math majors are increasingly in demand and can provide you with critical thinking
skills and technical training that will give you access to numerous fulfilling, higher-paid jobs.
With a bachelor's degree in mathematics you will get jobs ranging in statistics, actuarial
sciences, mathematical modeling, cryptography, and mathematics education.. With a master's
degree you will get jobs leading to a research career in engineering, mathematics or statistics.
Employment of mathematicians is projected to grow 21 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster
3

than the average for all occupations. Businesses will need mathematicians to analyze the
increasing volume of digital and electronic data. You will be able to have a range full of jobs and
will never have a hard time searching for them..Since there is a wide variety you will be able to
jump and explore different jobs until you find the one that suits you!
Since many people don't major in math ,there are lot of jobs available for mathematicians so
employers give a decent amount of wage. The median annual wage for mathematicians was
$111,110 in May 2015.The lowest 10 percent earned less than $56,200, and the highest 10
percent earned more than $167,250. In May 2015, the median annual wages for mathematicians
in the top industries in which they worked were as follows: Scientific Research and
developmental services ($127,080) federal government ($108,500),teaching college, universities,
etc($55,390). All hard work pays off really good in this case.
Majoring in math is hard work, you have to be able to have will and power to exercise your
brain and be able to love solving problems . Math is beautiful and with it you can be able to
welcome puzzles and other intellectual challenges and enjoys finding patterns in the world. The
courses are difficult as each prepares you for the next level ,but each course is an introduction for
the next course and prepares you well with the material. Since many don't take the challenge in
majoring in math, there are a lot of job opportunities and each job has a decent pay. Mathematics
is usually connected with teaching , but there is more to it. You can work with engineers,
astronomers, the federal government ,etc. If you have a passion for solving problems, able to
handle difficult problems ,wanting to find the answers for anything, then math is your major. You
need to be able to have an open mind and be able to find different paths for the solution. Your
passion and the will of learning will help you in this major.
