Obesity

By Dayani Ortiz and Shavon Johnson

Well, whats obesity?

Obesity is when your BMI (body-mass index) is at 30 (obese)-40
(extremely obese). [6]
Its the 2nd in leading preventional deaths.

Good example right here

What are the rates of obesity?

Americans are 24 heavier than they were in 1960.
More than 35 %Arkansas,West Virginia,Mississippi.
21%-22%Washington DC ,Colorado,and Hawaii.
California has 24.7 % of people with obesity.
10.9 % of female high school students.
16.6% of male high school students. [2]

How does obesity impact the cardiovascular

system?
Obesity can cause many diseases like...
Stroke-blood clot from fatty deposits in the arteries
and blocks oxygen and blood flow to the brain.
Cancer-Fat cells increases the production of
hormones and proteins.
Coronary heart disease-the fat in the arteries does
not allow the body to pump enough blood to the
body causing a heart attack. [7]

With all this in mind however...

Exercising and Healthy Eating.

Okay, so it isnt totally free and it takes a lot of effort and patience
BUT, its probably the more safer route and youll hear this a lot, but yes
there are a lot of benefits of healthy eating and exercise.
You dont need a fancy gym membership! Exercising for at least 30
minutes a day will help. Cardio exercises (running, swimming,
cycling, etc) really help! [5]
"The two things that stop people from losing weight with exercise
are either boredom or injury," -physical therapist Ben Quist, PhD,
NSCA. [5]

Gastric Bypass.
This is another way of losing weight, BUT IS ONLY RECOMMENDED
when:
Efforts to lose weight with diet and exercise have been
unsuccessful. (Long term, not just 2 weeks)
Your body mass index (BMI) is 40 or higher (extreme obesity).
Your BMI is 35 to 39.9 (obesity) and you have a serious weightrelated health problem, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood
pressure or severe sleep apnea. [6]

Advantages/Disadvantages.
The advantages of this procedure is that youll lose about 60-80% of
your body weight, reduce your appetite, and will restrict the amount
of food being consumed.
The disadvantages, however, are that the surgery is complicated
and could cause other complications later on and you may also start
to have deficiencies in vitamin B12, calcium, and iron. [4]

In conclusion
Obesity is slowly becoming more of an epidemic and is taking more
lives each passing year. With the lives of hundreds of thousands of
people being taken. This disease IS preventable but it will take hard
work and dedication to stop it. With this information we hope that
you all will take it all into consideration.
