AN INTRODUCTION TO BUDDHISM

JACK SMITH
A 2007 study from News Medical would
suggest that almost 1 in 10 Americans have
meditated. In this short film, Im going
zto find out exactly why there has been a
recent boom in meditation and whether or
not the ancient practice is for you.

JACK SMITH
Meditation has been around for thousands
of years, the earliest documents recorded
which involve meditation were found in
around 1500 BCE and involved the Hindu
tradition of Vedantism. However,
historians argue that meditation has been
around since 3000 BCE.

JACK SMITH
Between 600-500 BCE, other meditation
forms began to be developed by Taoist
China and Buddhist India.

JACK SMITH
Between 400-100 BCE, The Yoga Sutras of
Patanjuli was compiled, the book aimed to
outline the eight limbs of Yoga. The
Bhagavad Gita was also written in this
peiod, this book discussed the philosophy
of yoga, meditation and the practice of
living a spiritual life.

JACK SMITH
In the year 300, the practice of
meditation began to spread westward via
the Silk Road; this meant that meditation
began to affect religions such as Judaism.

JACK SMITH
Dosho, a Japanese monk discovered the art
of Zen on a trip to China in 653, and upon
returning to Japan he introduced
Meditation. The practice began to grow
significantly in Japan.

JACK SMITH
Throughout the middle ages, the practice
of meditation developed into many
religious traditions as a form of prayer;
such as Jewish Meditation`
JACK SMITH
In the eighteenth century, meditation
began to take off in western culture. Then
in the nineteenth century, there was a
huge rise in popularity for meditation
when the book Tibetan Book of the Dead
was released in 1927.

JACK SMITH
Then, in 1979, the MBSR program was
founded in the US, which used meditative
techniques in order to help patients with
chronic diseases. Since this, meditation
has grown wildly. It plays a central role
in many different religious traditions and
rituals, in addition to helping
individuals manage stress and overall
well-being.

The opening shot is of the sun, then followed by the clips
of the Henley Yoga Studio interview.

JACK SMITH
As you now know, meditation has been
around for thousands of years and has
diverted from its religious roots. I am
lucky enough to interview Carlin Clarke, a
meditation teacher located in Henley-OnThames. With her help, I may be able to
find out why it is that meditation is
becoming so popular.

TRYING MEDITATION FOR THE FIRST TIME

my pockets.

JACK SMITH
Now I know where meditation came from and
why people meditate. Now, I just need to
try it out myself.

JACK SMITH
According to news-medical, in order to
meditate, I will need: a quiet setting, a
comfortable or poised posture, a passive
but receptive attitude and an object of
focus or a mantra.
For three days I am going to try out
meditation and blog my experience, to see
if what Carlin says is true.

FINAL DAY OF MEDITATION TIMELAPSE

EVALUATION OF THE EXPERIENCE AND OVERALL

FINAL EVALUATION

JACK SMITH
Meditation was certainly an interesting
experience for me, I think that I will
continue as it has definitely helped me
conquer the stress of examinations.
I would definitely recommend meditation to
anyone because of the clear health
benefits that come with it. It also helps
you to calm down and deal with stress much
better.
If youre thinking about getting into
meditation, try find a class in your local
area just to try it. Classes can be
relatively inexpensive and some yoga
studios do deals on first lessons.
