Professional Speaker Analysis

I had the opportunity to attend the 16th Annual Leadership Conference at

Utah Valley University on Monday, October 26, 2015. The title of the
conference was Come Alive. Hoan Do was the keynote speaker at the
conference. He talked a lot about how our attitude determines everything. I
was able to relate his speech to concepts we have been learning in the
Maximum Achievement seminars. Brain Tracy also talks about how our
attitude determines our success in all different aspects of life.
Organization
Throughout his speech, Hoan Do relates a lot of his personal stories and
examples back to three key ideas; chose the right attitude, find your
outfit, and make meaningful connections. When he started talking about
choosing the right attitude he told us the story about an assignment he was
given in theatre class. He talked about how he explored every possible way
of getting out of the assignment, and his negative attitude towards the
assignment. Then he started talking about the different ways he turned that
negative attitude into a positive attitude. Instead of looking at the
assignment as something he had no desire to do he decided to change the
radio station his demonstration of changing the radio station was saying
hold up! Thats whack because the truth is Im awesome and I can make
this assignment fun! Then Mr. Do had the audience try the Hold up! Thats
whack activity with something in their life that they had a negative attitude
towards. Next, Mr. Do talked about finding your outfit. In his description of
finding your outfit Mr. Do talked about chasing your passion. He told us to
find a job that we are really interested in and that we will enjoy, not
whichever job will make us the most money. Mr. Do was very motivational
and encouraged us to pursue the things we love. The final key point that Mr.
Do talked about was meaningful connections. He mentioned that the three
most important relationships are; mentor, mate, and mentee. Mentors are
people we look up to such as teachers, coaches and advisors. Mates are our
peers, and a mentee is yourself.
1

The organizational pattern the speaker used was Problem/Solution. During

the course of his speech Hoan Do repeatedly presented his audience with a
problem they could relate to then give a solution. For example, Mr. Do asked
the audience Life can be stressful, yes or no? Most of the audience agreed
that life can be stressful at times. The problem he presents to us is the
different types of stress we experience throughout life. The solution he gives
us is the idea of changing the station. If certain things in our life are
causing us to experience extreme amounts of stress then all we have to do is
change our attitude, or try a different approach. Hoan Do presented us with
many problems and gave a solution for each. He also told a story about a
project he was assigned in theater class. The students were asked to choose
a song to lip-sync to. Hoan talked about his emotions to the assignment, how
he didnt know what song to do, how he thought it would be embarrassing,
and how he tried to think of ways to get out of doing the assignment. When
he realized he there was no way to skip the assignment and still pass the
test he realized he would have to change his attitude about the assignment
and look at it in a different way. He decided to make it laughable and fun and
ended up having a good time all because he was able to change the
station or have a different attitude about the assignment. Hoan Do used
deductive reasoning in his speech. An example of deductive reasoning he
used in his speech was the theatre assignment story. This is an example of
deductive reasoning because he presented a problem and followed it with a
conclusion.
Supporting Material
Ethos
Ethos is identified as the credibility a person or speaker has. The conference
program stated: Hoan Do is a student success coach, author and competitor
in NBCs hot show, American Ninja Warrior. From an early age, Hoan
understood the sacrifices his parents has made in their escape to the United
States during the Vietnam War. Feeling indebted to his parents for their
courageous pursuit of a better life, Hoan vowed to ensure that one day, he
would be able to take care of his parents. Hoans hard work took him to
Malibu, California where he attended Pepperdine University. Recognized as
the best youth mentor by the International Examiner, Hoan travels across
North America speaking at colleges, high schools, and student leadership
conferences where he shares practical advice that helps students to succeed
in and out of school. Hoans engaging style and abili8ty to share important
life lessons in a way that resonates with his audiences has earned him the
Verizon Wireless Motivator Award. Hoan Do represented his credibility very
well. He was professional in his speaking and did an amazing job motivating
the audience by using different activities that helped encourage the
audience to be engaged in the speech.
Pathos
2

Pathos is defined as the emotional appeal the speaker uses in a presentation.

Mr. Do applied Pathos to his speech by using personal stories that the
audience could relate too. For example, Mr. Do told a story about how his
college roommate came home mad one night because he was stressed about
school and personal relationships. The story he told was easy for the
audience to relate to. As teenagers we often experience stress and like Mr.
Do said; Sometimes you just feel like a soda fizzing up before it bursts.
Hoan Do used pathos to relate to his audience, on a personal level. By
forming that relationship with his audience, he is causing us to feel emotion
because we can relate to his stories and experiences.
Logos
Logos is defined as the appeal to logic the speaker uses in a presentation.
Hoan Dos main appeal to logic was his focus on the three most important
relationships in life. Mr. Do stated, The key is to focus on three relationships;
mentor, mate, and mentee. Hoan Do then went on to talk about how our
mentors are people like our teachers and coaches. They are people we look
up to and go to if we are seeking guidance. Our mates are people like our
peers. They are people who understand what we are going through and help
us achieve our goals.
Delivery
Hoan Do was a very motivational, interesting public speaker. His personal
stories made the speech interesting. He interacted with the audience in a
positive way. By getting the audience to participate, he made the speech fun.
Not only was Mr. Dos presentation filled with useful information such as the
changing the station idea, but the speech was also entertaining because
he made eye contact with the entire room. Hoan Do also moved around on
stage a lot so he could address the whole room and encourage everyone to
participate. Every time Hoan Do moved around he moved with purpose. He
didnt move around the stage because he was nervous or anxious. When he
moved around it was to make a point or address a different area of the
audience
Hoan Do used a PowerPoint as a visual aid in the delivery of his speech. The
PowerPoint stated only main points and was not distracting from the
speakers presentation. The PowerPoint also featured images that went along
with the speakers main points to add visual aspects to the presentation. Mr.
Do also had props to go along with his speech such as the cheerleading outfit
he used for his lip-sync performance. His vocal variety was loud and he
projected very well so the entire audience could hear him.
Motivation
3

Motivation is a critical element to any speech because the speaker should try
to move the audience to act. Hoan Do talked a lot about choosing your own
attitude. He told us that we chose our own attitude and if we dont like it we
can change the station. A huge motivational strategy that Mr. Do used
thought his speech was audience participation. Instead of just telling us what
we can do, he encouraged us to get up and try it out. Mr. Do also gave
personal examples which made the audience know that they are not alone in
the struggles they face. One activity the speaker encouraged us to
participate in was the hold up, thats whack activity. By participating in this
activity, I already felt more motivated and encouraged to change my attitude
about different aspects in my life.
Hoan Do did an amazing job encouraging his audience and moving them to
act. He gives specific examples on how we can change our attitudes and
strive for success. The topic of Mr. Dos speech was Chose to succeed. Not
only did he give the audience examples of how we can succeed by using
mentors, mates, and mentees, but he also taught us that we can choose our
attitude. Hoan Do taught me that if I chose to succeed and be successful I
can and I will be. Mr. Dos speech was inspirational, motivational, and
innovative and made me want to change my attitude and work hard to
achieve my goals.
