Paraprofessional Plan

WWU Student Name: Alicia Fregozo

Content Area: Math Multiplying mixed numbers
Materials
Whiteboard=Graphic organizer paper in clear page protector, (1 per
student plus teacher)
Dry erase markers (1 per student plus teacher)
Paper towel/eraser (1 per student plus teacher)
Multiplication table (at least 1, possible 1 per student)
Behavior expectations poster
Mastery measure (1 per student)
Practice problems
Setting & Time
Time: 10:15 10:40
Setting: In hallway at kidney table with whiteboard

Instructional Objective
Students will multiply mixed numbers using the strategy of converting each
mixed number into an improper fraction, multiplying straight across,
converting each improper fraction back into a mixed number and simplifying
if possible.

Procedures/sequence of events w/ desired student response

Signal for attention: Thank you for joining me in the hallway, lets get started
sixth graders
Behavior expectations: 1. Use materials appropriately
2. Follow directions
3. Raise your hand to talk
*Read each rule and ask students to show you what that looks like, praise
positive behaviors
Target: These expectations will be important today as we practice
multiplying mixed numbers *Post target*

*Pass out materials*

You will each get a whiteboard that is sectioned off into four parts, each part
is one step to multiply mixed numbers. *Read a step, ask students to repeat
back. After all steps are read, ask students to summarize the steps to a
partner*
Step 1: Write the problem
Step 2: Convert to improper fractions
Step 3: Multiply straight across
Step 4: Convert to mixed number (simplify)
Post Vocabulary
Improper fraction Mixed number

Convert

Demonstrate
Here is how I would use these steps to solve the following problem: 1 x 2

*Follow each step and think out loud to solve the problem in front of
students*
Ask student to state step 1.
Step 1: First I will write the problem. Write. Wow, thats all I had to do, step
1 is done!
Ask student to state step 2.
Step 2: To convert 1 to an improper fraction I will multiply the
denominator and the whole number, 4x1, then add the numerator, 4+3, to
find out how many pieces/numerator. My new fraction is 7/4. Repeat with
second fraction to create 5/2
Ask student to state step 3.
Step 3: Now I will multiply straight across. 7x5=35 and 4x2=8. My new
fraction is 35/8
Ask student to state step 4.
Step 4: I can convert 35/8 to a mixed number by dividing 35 by 8. 8 goes
into 35 4 whole times, so 4 is my new whole number. My remainder is 3 so
my new mixed number is 4 3/8.
Lets try it again, but this time you all will practice it with me.
Pass out materials, remind student of expectations.

Practice with students

We will work on one step at a time.
Here is the problem we will solve: 2 1/5 x 3 2/3
Complete step 1 and then put your pen in the air. Call on one student to
share what they did. Model what they did on your whiteboard as they say it.
2 1/5 x 3 2/3
Complete step 2 and then put your pen in the air. Call on one student to
share what they did. Model what they did on your whiteboard as they say it.
2 1/5 x 3 2/3 = 11/5 x 11/3
Complete step 3 and then put your pen in the air. Call on one student to
share what they did. Model what they did on your whiteboard as they say it.
11x11=121, 5x3=15.
121/15
Complete step 4 and then put your pen in the air. Call on one student to
share what they did. Model what they did on your whiteboard as they say it.
121/15 = 8 1/15
Individual Practice
Great job following the steps to solve the multiplication problem! Now I will
give you another problem but you get to work on your own to solve it using
the steps. If you get stuck or have a question let me or a peer know.
Remember, you can use your multiplication table to help you.
Here is the problem I would like you to solve: 1 5/7 x 3 4/5
When youve solved the problem, flip your board over and wait. You may
scribble on the back of your board while you wait.
Wait for all students to solve the problem.
Signal for attention: Alright, get ready to flip your board over and show me
the answer...flip it over now! Scan answers. If anyone has solved the problem
incorrectly, ask a student with a correct answer/ to use the large whiteboard
and walk everyone through the steps. Student can make changes on their
white board.
If everyone solved the answer correctly, praise students for their effort and
diligence in following the steps.
I have three more problems for you all to solve. I want you to take your time
and use the steps of the strategy to solve these problems. If you follow the
steps and use your multiplication table to help you, I am confident that you
will all solve the problems correctly!
