Instructional Objective
Students will multiply mixed numbers using the strategy of converting each
mixed number into an improper fraction, multiplying straight across,
converting each improper fraction back into a mixed number and simplifying
if possible.

Demonstrate
Here is how I would use these steps to solve the following problem: 1 x 2
*Follow each step and think out loud to solve the problem in front of
students*
Ask student to state step 1.
Step 1: First I will write the problem. Write. Wow, thats all I had to do, step
1 is done!
Ask student to state step 2.
Step 2: To convert 1 to an improper fraction I will multiply the
denominator and the whole number, 4x1, then add the numerator, 4+3, to
find out how many pieces/numerator. My new fraction is 7/4. Repeat with
second fraction to create 5/2
Ask student to state step 3.
Step 3: Now I will multiply straight across. 7x5=35 and 4x2=8. My new
fraction is 35/8
Ask student to state step 4.
Step 4: I can convert 35/8 to a mixed number by dividing 35 by 8. 8 goes
into 35 4 whole times, so 4 is my new whole number. My remainder is 3 so
my new mixed number is 4 3/8.
Lets try it again, but this time you all will practice it with me.
Pass out materials, remind student of expectations.
